This is the only thread to read. Thank you, OP.

It's been a fantastic reality check for myself and my son, not so much on placements but to show him the likelihood of playing in a meaningful way is not a given just because you make the team. Thanks for all the time and effort

What the above person said.....our son is a few years away from any of this but this thread is really interesting and useful. Thanks for keeping up with it, and don't let the others get to you.

Would like to echo the praise for the OP's work- very valuable in considering placement and the odds of playing time/longevity in a program.

Agreed. As a coach who speaks to his players about setting realistic goals, it is helpful to show this type of info to the kids. They can see that there are clear differences between the typical D1 paths and the D3 paths. They can also see that this region is not producing a lot of players for the top D1 programs, so good to have a back-up plan if the UNC or Stanford dream is not materializing.

                          For D1

A handful of the best players from each DAP team = 10
                          A handful from best Prep/ other club = 5
Another handful to the lower level D1's = 5

                          That's all.

                          Adding more = disappointing experience

I find the work very fascinating too. I especially like seeing the high level players who go to D3

My now son had the perception that it was D1 or bust. It's information like this that helps dispel some of those assumptions. It's nice to see some of the Prep School players or other high quality players and where they end up

Getting playing time and excelling in D3 can be just as tough as D1--Big rosters all around and the decent/solid programs are very competitive to get on the field ---I understand and appreciate that having realistic expectations is important for younger athletes ; but the main theme of this thread turned to negative in my opinion. Is it really news to people that D1 athletics are selective? Life is tough and sometimes things don't work out even when you go in eyes wide open... If he does have the skill/confidence and the opportunity to play in a challenging situation; who is anyone to say he shouldn't go? Because he's from MA or may fail? My only advice would be to make any decision based on the kids own ideas and solid advice from good sources--most 17yr olds are smarter than you think--

Its news to my young player who has always excelled in soccer. He thought D1 was the only option. This information as well as speaking to older players has opened his eyes to more options. Also going to D1 games and seeing the number of foreign players has helped.

Yes D3 playing time is very competitive too. Thanks for that nugget
