OP here. The top class, 2013 had 40% of D1's still playing their senior season. More recent years look to be headed lower. I looked at D3 once and the number is closer to 50%.

Here is an interesting result from the message board of D3. soccer. It's a men's result. Even though it is a spring scrimmage it does throw some light onto how a good D3 team competes against an average D1 team.

" Rowan just beat Division 1 Delaware 6-0! Rowan looks incredible, this game could have been much worse."

In all fairness to Rowan it probably could have been worse. Rowan lost only 1 starter to graduation. BUT in Delaware's defense that is a Delaware team that lost 2 forwards to MLS draft(first round draft choices mind you), and three starting defenders to graduation. Had those teams met regular season I'd wager the ranch Delaware wins 2-0, 3-0.
However point well taken this D3 Rowan team, could beat many lower D1 teams

BUT in Delaware's defense that is a Delaware team that lost 2 forwards to MLS draft(first round draft choices mind you), and three starting defenders to graduation. Had those teams met regular season I'd wager the ranch Delaware wins 2-0, 3-0.
However point well taken this D3 Rowan team, could beat many lower D1 teams

Rowan lost to D3 Champions Tufts 1-0 in the D3 tournament so a strong team. It would be interesting to see what result Tufts would get from a BU, NE scrimmage. Do they scrimmage any D1 programs?

I heard that they have scrimmaged Harvard in the past in the spring, but am not sure what they did or are doing this year.

As much fun as a Tufts vs Harvard, BU, etc., scrimmage would be, it still is a situation where coaches would be doing things differently than in a true game, so no real conclusions could be made. In the end, it is entertaining to consider what D3 teams could beat what D1 teams, but we'll never know unless the games actually count for something.

Personally, I prefer to wonder about how Pele or Cruyff would do if they played today...
