larger clubs
Clubs as large as NEFC, Stars, and GPS potentially miss the boat on non-club kids by holding on the one or two tryouts.
Essentially, they rely on their own in-house selection from players already in the club with the infrequent siting of a non-club player who gets invited to a practice or two. The latter can also be achieved by calling the coach and bringing your kid in.
That said, the top teams for each club are essentially selected (or at least 95%) prior to the start of any formally scheduled tryouts. When 50-100 kids show up to get on the ECNL, DAP, PreAcademy or NPL teams, the coaches are only looking for the 'messi' of the group.

It's rare for a kid to truly standout in cattle call tryouts like that. Clubs already know who they want from the outside. That's why if you think your kid really might have a shot get them to some tam practices well before tryouts. Gives both sides a chance to see if there's a fit beforehand.

Once you've accepted an offer, when should we hear from the coach or administrator about number assignments? I'd like to order uniforms sooner rather than later, but can't do anything until we have a jersey number assigned.

Parents need to relax. Tryouts just finished last week. Some might have been 2 weeks ago but if you are a U15 and older team you dont start until March unless ECNL or Northeast NPL. I would assume you will hear in a few weeks. Some coaches are pro-active than others like ours and has already sent out information.

and if you think that comment was "mean", well then you haven't been on TS very much

Our coach is already having an optional training to day. We have already sent our top 3 numbers and having a team meeting next week. As another poster said =, some coaches are more proactive than others. First time with this club also.
