I get less concerned about the number of freshmen as the total number on the roster. I've seen some that are ludicrous.

College rosters are HUGE. 25 - 30 is not uncommon

Attrition is even more stark than that. My son has a recruiting class of 8 and now in his junior year he is the only one still playing.

The coaches look at it as a no lose situation. You carry that many players with the hope that you get some quality. If you don't, you cut them and all it cost you was a uniform and maybe some shoes. You only have to travel with your 18 best and you have a built in practice squad.

Not the op but I've seen many much higher than that.

I saw a GA school - a small D3 and the name is escaping me - but they had over 40. Literally enough for two squads. The team photo looked like a football team pic.

Bolts have 18 kids on these lists. Granted only three in the D1 category. The Revs top the D1 list with 6. After that GPS follows the Bolts in the total number. And NEFC thereafter. For most of these kids, the goal is to get into a good college and play ball. Either the Bolts are doing a decent job (despite the W/L/T) or they start out with smart kids and parents with good connections. Either way, the numbers look pretty good.

Which is why GDA may not be all that USSF thinks it will be, and boys ECNL may work quite well. For many it's all about college. Whoever delivers best on that is the winner, but if you can deliver that AND not have to give up HS? win/win

But, why would you pay for the Bolts...for all those years to end up at a D3 school with NO scholarship if you had parents that had connections to get you in in the first place?

The Bolts have more than just the DAP team. How many of these kids are coming off of their divisional teams?

Why be so specific? GPS and NEFC are as or more expensive than the Bolts DAP or NPL programs. Blazers are even higher. Even Valeo cranked up the fees this year. According to you, why pay for any club sports 'for all those year to end up at a D3 school'? If you look at the list, there are some excellent academic schools that the kids are attending. If soccer is the difference to get your kid into a high academic ranked school then great!!! If it is the thing that gets your kid into any particular school then great.
