    Needham Tournament

The games started last night. Is there anything positive to post?

    Potomac

Several top teams (or some decent ones) went to Maryland to play the top teams in the country. GPS and Blazers sent their older teams down. If anyone knows the happenings please post.

From what I've seen, its been very good. Compared to the disgrace of the State Cup which had officials that had no business being out there, Needham has been exceptional in this regard.

refereeing at Needham very sub par. Basic stuff- when to call offside, ball can be played while on the ground per FIFA rule change- needham refs didn't get the memo

From what I have seen they are calling it equally tight on both sides and net result (IMO) are better games.

Seriously, we have this big player and he gets pushed all over the place, all the time... most refs don't call cause he's big.. almost fell over when I heard the whistle today where he got a call.

Also a handball.. is a handball...not discretionary... We have a few called against us and they were correct ... Good for them.. As long as called equally tight, I would rather see this than the fiasco's the games have turned into in the State Cup and NEP.

the thing about handling, or hand ball, is that it has to be intentional. Thats what makes it a judgment call, not simply did the ref see the ball hit the hand.

To learn more about the "hand ball," we need to begin by looking inside our FIFA Laws of the Game to see what the rules really are. First of all, unbeknownst to many, there is no such rule as "hand ball." In reality, Law XII states that is illegal if a player "handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)" This means that is not, I repeat not, a foul if the ball touches a player's hand. It is only a foul if the player intentionally handles the ball. Therefore, all of those times that a defender kicks the ball right into a player's hand or the ball bounces up and hits an arm, these are not fouls and should not be called.

Reasonable thoughts and basic understanding of the rules are not allowed here. Go peddle your common sense somewhere else These people just need to place blame somewhere else for their mediocre team losing.

People love to link and run.. There are rules that IF the player is protecting himself and/or at point blank range where unavoidable, then it's not an offense.

However, most times we are know what this foul is, and how many times the call is missed.

A Handball is a handball.... Except for those who hide behind a link..

Refs have been OK, not great, but OK. ARs not so much. I've seen a range of excellent and brutally incompetent.

                            Parents, of course, are worse.
