Playing time translates into $$ for the student. The increase in foreign players means less money for local, the box scores tell what players at this time they think will help win.

Over the last few years with the exclusion of players from HS sports there has been and increase in DAP players going to NE. A great school. so that is not the issue.

Getting playing time and thus $$ is another issue. One kid is off to SD, Melrose kid seems to be real deal. I may be wrong but I think 7-9 kids from DAP are going to NE from the last two classes.

I was interested in watching UML and NE play this year. UML has a lot of HS kids that took another path rather than DAP. would have been fun but now it is rather watered down.
This whole discussion just shows how confused parents are about college soccer. Five hours of training a day takes a bite out of everything else - coursework, relationships, sleep. For most of the guys on the roster, its all practice and little or no play time. Watching your kid study calculus isn't fun, but that's really what school is for. The kids on scholarship rightfully shouldn't pay to go to school, because to a large extent, they aren't going.

I love how some here make playing college soccer sound like a 1970s Russian gymnastics training gulag. I've run into several major D1 teams in airports and they look happy as can be.

exactly. Guaranteed not one of them has a kid in a D1 program

That they busted their butts and gave up academics to practice 5 hours a day and sit on a bench during games. Good choices!

Think he did look at the box scores - one of them played, another subbed in.. what a waste.

                2014 D1 Boys Playing

Our first look at the Freshman. We are starting with 39 on the D1 list, second only to 50 for 2013's. This post will look at those playing a lot, defined by starting 50% or more of the games to date.

                Player/Team/Games/GP/GS/G/A

                Frantsdy Pierrot/Northeastern/5/5/5/1/0
                Harrison Swartz/Northeastern/5/5/5/0/0
                Henry Balf/BC/5/5/5/0/0
                Idrissa Bangura/BC/5/5/5/0/0
                Ackim Mpofu/Northeastern/5/4/3/1/0
                Matt Mooney/UMass/5/5/4/0/0
                Brandon Vasquez/UMass/5/5/3/0/0
                Will Rasid/UNH/5/5/3/0/0
                Noah Teperow/UML/5/5/3/0/0

So only 9 of 39 are playing a lot, similar to the smaller 2010-12 classes. Note that all these players are from local schools. The next post will include subbing a lot.

                  2014 D1 Boys Playing

Next we look at those players subbing a lot. This includes those playing in 50% or more of the games so far.

                  Player/Team/Games/GP/GS/G/A

                  John Conry/Bryant/5/5/2/0/0
                  Dan Casey/CCSU/3/2/1/0/0
                  Tyler Symkowicz/UMass 5/5/1/0/0
                  Alex Desantis/UMass/5/4/0/0/0
                  Alex Ainscough/Stanford/4/4/0/0/0
                  Mario Prata/Seton Hall/4/2/0/0/0

So of the 39 kids, only 15 are getting much playing time. So what about the other 24? I will cover that in the next post.

                    2014 D1 Boys Not Playing

Of the remaining 24 players, the breakdown is as follows:

                    6 saw the field
                    14 DNP yet
                    4 are not rostered

A big and expected hit involves the UML recruits, as only 2 of 7 Freshman have played so far.

OP here. I reviewed 2013 and found that 11 were playing a lot this time last year versus 9 for 2014. That has grown to 19 this season. So we'll see how it goes. As far as comparing the two categories, 2013 had over 30 playing and 2014 has 15. That is a big difference.

What about the ones not rostered? Why would that be and is that about average? (new to the college soccer beat)

In my experience 1 or 2 kids/year do not get on the roster. 4 is a little more than normal. The most intriguing is the Revs player going to NU going missing.

Maybe it has happened in the past - I don't remember, but I forget a lot of stuff these days - but why would a committed players, especially D1 (meaning not likely to change their mind), not be on? I'm assuming a red-shirt wouldn't be on a roster, but is an injured player normally listed?

One I recall is where a kid was going to UConn but was moved for a year to E Ct St. For UMass schools, they recruit a lot of players who sometimes don't make the rostered team.

Red shirts are on the roster because technically they aren't redshirted until the end of the season.
