Baltimore does NOT surprise me at all. The Waterfront area and Camden Yards is nice but the rest of the city is SCARY
Some other local schools of note:

    #13 MIT
#14 Johnson & Wales Prov RI
    #17 Brown
    #21 Leslie Boston
    #25 Yale Very bad history!
    #30 Northeastern
    #38 Fitchburg St
    #45 UMass Dartmouth

So unfortunately EMass and Providence is well represented on this list.

I dont think the issue with Springfield College is the issue itself, great school, great programs, great little campus, the issue to me would be the city itself which is so rampant with crime. So it is the location whcih is right next to a very high crime zone.

          Even worse-AIC

            10. Springfield, Mass.
Rounding out the list is Springfield, Massachusetts, which, according to the FBI, has the 10th highest level of violent crime per capita among small cities in the United States. Springfield’s high levels of violent crime and gang activity have lead its police department to adopt Iraq-style “counterinsurgency” strategy. This strategy involves community building in which officers work to solve the underlying problems that contribute to crime. Increased police visibility has also been used to help combat issues with gangs in an attempt to make Springfield residents feel more secure. Although many members of the local police department believe these strategies will help, the jury is still out on the effect of the these new efforts and Springfield remains one of the most dangerous American cities in 2012. Violent Crime Rate: 1039.36 per 100,000 people Population: 154,518 Murder Rate: 7.12 per 100,000 people Officer to Population Ratio: 1:420 Median Household Income: $52,762 Unemployment Rate: 7.9 percent Dangerous Small City Rank in 2011: #9

This is the FBI's 2014 list. Springfield is not on that list. Your data looks at least 2-3 years old. Why didn't you use the most recent report?

OP here. Not the most relevant discussion lately but at least it's keeping the thread near the top. It will likely be slow here until late Sept when I issue my intial report on who is playing. A handful of kids are going to top D1 schools and I will be interested in seeing whether they can get on the field.

The following is from the Springfield College website

Cleveland, Ohio – June 7, 2013 – Springfield College Athletics finished 24th nationally in the final overall standings of the 2012-2013 Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. With its finish, Springfield found itself within the top 5% of all Division III athletic programs, as there are a total of 444 Division III institutions nationwide. This marked the second-consecutive year and third time in the past five years that Springfield College has finished as one of the top 25 Division III athletic programs in the country.

In addition -- the SC mens volleyball team won the national championship this year. Now, is SC in a bad neighborhood - yes...has the mens soccer team not done so well in recent years - yes. BUT...to say men's soccer is has not done well because the school is in a bad area and no one wants to go there does not seem to impact the other sports at SC.

It's easy to say "bad area" = "bad teams" - but that does not seem to be true for SC in general.

Not the intent to claim bad teams intent was to figure out why you do not see many club players going there on the commit list but more so why is enrollment down. Location ? Crime in City ? Me thinks so.

Springfield's men's program is on the rise. They went 15-6 last year after getting their first NCAA berth in eons in 2012. They get an occasional DAP player and reportedly have a big recruiting class coming in next year.

Fair enough, but I think that if we looked on the "commit list" for other sports we would see some of the stars in that particular sport on that list (as seen in the outcome of the overall sports at SC ... note...imagine a "talking volleyball", "talking basketball", etc. site...the horror...). It looks to me like the other sports are getting some good commits. Now, as for enrollment being down overall, that I do not know about...you could be right...or the cost could be an issue.

Agree with you. Not taking anything away from the school academically or athletically both have good history in the the college ranks. SC grads escpecally on the sports medicine field all over in the pro's working. Historically strong as a PE school and a demanding PA program. Quality all around just the neighborhood thing can be an issue.

An to the other gentlemen on last years performance agree as well new young coach compared to the old timer who missed out on several good recruits because he thought he knew it all. bout time he is gone.
