The Death of High School Sports?

I think we can all agree, no matter how we personally feel about HS sports, that it is still pretty important to the kids who play it. And as we all know the advent of club sports as put some pressure on HS sports. Maybe the best examples of that is ice hockey and soccer. I happen to have come across this today,

"The California State Assembly passed a bill Thursday mandating schools permit boys to play on girls’ athletic teams and utilize the ladies’ locker room if they gender identify as girls – or vice-versa for girls identifying as boys."

With recent stories of boys, who have a physical advantage over girls, competing on girls teams and as a result the team going onto championships, I'm just wondering if this might add another nail to the coffin of school sports. Perhaps I'm old fashion, but I wouldn't want my daughter playing on a team where she might lose playing time to a boy nor win a championship because of a boy.

I'm surprise to here boys can play on a girls team. I know my daughter has played on a boy's team (for soccer) when their was not enough interest to form a girls team.

In the league(s) we have played the rule is if even 1 boy is on the team then the team is considered a boy's team and must play in the boy's division.

I think boys in Mass can (and do) play on girls teams where no comparable boys team exists (such as field hockey).

I don't know if field hockey is a great example. Have you seen some of those girls? There is quite a bit of gender confusion there.

It does need to go both ways. Boys should be able to play on girls teams. Girls can play on boys teams. There is even a MIAA rule that disqalifies a male wrestler for getting an erection if wrestling a girl.

You folks are missing the point of the first post. This is a law that allows a boy to play on a girls team if he 'self-identifies' as a girl. And who's the judge of that? Only the boy , of course. It's not only potentially destructive to sports, but it also shows how far down the rabbit hole we've gone in society in general. No one will stand up and just say to get the kid to a good psychologist. Richard Tisei is a darling in the Ma. Republican party. A party one used to associate with some kind of moral standards. Yet Tisei sponsored a bill to allow men who 'felt they were a woman' to use the same bathrooms as littler girls. To bring soccer back into it, imagine your 6 year old daughter was with you in Lancaster and had to go to the bathroom. And just after she went in, a 6'5" 300 man in a dress followed her in, which would probably scar her for life if she saw him entering a stall next to her. You would try to stop him or follow him in to protect your daughter, AND YOU WOULD GET ARRESTED, thanks to a law desired by a guy who was almost lieutenant governor and then almost a U.S. Congressman!!!!

To the original poster, sorry to slightly get off track, but to me you brought up the larger point of political correctness run amok. And Mass. is usually right up front. And if we keep electing the same immoral phonies election after election, then soon expect to see a 6', 200 boy running up and down the soccer field right next to little Mia.

Yes. I'm sure there will be thousands of 6' 200# boys who self identify a girls.

              You are a fool.

Less than .1% of people identify themselves as transgender. I'm sure the numbers will now swell so they can play soccer against girls an use the ladies restroom. Lol.

BTW, your daughter wil be fine. You are the one who has been scared for life. Please don't infect your children.

Those were his words - I wouldn't have chosen them on my own.

Thinking it is so, doesn't make it so. The saying is "it is what it is", not "it is what I think it is".

The death of HS sports is going to be the constant encroachment that club soccer has been having by playing at the same time as HS sports. Soccer started this issue when DAP went to a 10 month calendar. Now we are seeing the girls side get closer and closer to the HS issue though I'm not certain NPL or ECNL will have fully adopted a overlap.

MIAA is trying to keep a steady ground and is not being very flexable to the avg. student. It is weakening the HS level sports to a point that kids are starting to choose the more competitve environment. They would wise to be flexable and adopt an adjustment to the rules where high schools can determine student rules. It will never happen but it would be better for HS sports in the long run.

"Back in the day", Club sports was rare in the 80s and they were more like pickup games with some skill training. This left the majority of the player pool in the local HS which in turn made it hyper competitive. Today some of these atheletes are leaving because they are unable to do both due to conflicting rules. Some clubs choose to be flexable but several are migrating towards the ECNL, NY_NPL models of Fall schedules which means more overlap. It will be interesting once the latest "soccer landscape" document circulates.

It depends what town high school programs your son/daughter belong to. I know in our town many, many of the kids pick high school over all of the above and they play d1.

Several kids also go to private schools as they tend to be more flexable.
