College Coaches Coaching Players in a Same-Sex Relationship

Coaches, if you are coaching young adults, there is going to be up to a 10% chance you will have a player in a same-sex relationship (might be a high estimate). So, there is a good chance there will be 1-2 players on your roster is. Add in you have a group of people, with similar likes and interests and spending so much time together, players dating each other shouldn't be considered unusual today.

So, coaches, you need to learn to deal with it. Getting yourself involved, punishing players because ones you prefer are hurt, won't help. Yelling at players about their "+1" in the middle of a game, won't help. Enough with the "family" messages if you aren't going to treat all your players with respect.

    You know who you are.

I'm about as far away from woke as one can be, but also understand respect for people no matter what they believe. And, I'm not even directly affected other than to see some young adults getting dragged unnecessarily.

Agree but what about if they are teammates? when it interferes with the team? What if they both used to date other different players on the team & there is mega drama & it’s ruining team culture & chemistry? What if one is a captain and using that unfair power advantage over the other & over the team in general? What if the lovers only play with and pass to each other at the expense of the team, losing games because of it? What if they are hooking up on travel trips in team hotel rooms of uninvolved teammates who are told to get out (or not!)? What about when they break up and ask their teammates to take “sides” against the other one?

Most coaches I know don’t allow inter-squad dating but could care less about same sex relationships w/anyone not on the team & not a coach/asst coach/captain or any unequal power dynamic. Then its mind your own business and respect everyone’s privacy. Sane sex relationships are quite common in soccer-though many hide it from coaches/parents.

Hypotheticals, but all could happen to be sure..

Emma Hayes tried to come down on one side, and caught the backlash and had to concede. The reasoning is sound - in college I laughed as the shortstop on the softball team beat up the left fielder for cheating on her with the 3rd basemen...true story. It had a negative affect on the team. And, in the situation I referenced above, coach clearly took sides during a breakup. I get it's unnecessary drama, but Coach needs to be the mature one in the room. Relationships are going to happen, and being divisive over it just ruins the team dynamic. Just treat them as players and stay out of their bedrooms.

We need some Russian golden showers to make the story credible.
