    NE Surf ECNL RL 2

NE Surf getting ECRL 2. Will RI Surf be next?

    #2
All of the NE Surf teams are good and dominate DPL. They are not connected to RI Surf and are much better in every way. NE Surf is stronger than most of the top ECRL teams in MA in every age group. They should not be in ECRL2. They should be in ECRL with option for ECNL one day. They are the club to watch.

I don't disagree about the quality of the top NE Surf teams BUT if ECNL was going to let them in they should have done it instead of SSS. Unless letting SSS in signals a fundamental shift in how clubs are admitted to ECNL it's not likely that they let NE Surf in

This is true, but politics will make getting into ECNL an uphill climb for them. Their location makes them too much of a danger to Stars, not to mention Scorpions and now SSS. The talented kids in metrowest would much rather go to Newton than Lancaster, Taunton or Union Point. Not to mention that it is more accessible from the north/northwest of Boston than any of the other clubs. They would be too much of a threat to the clubs already in ECNL.

Is this true? If so, that's sad.

A regional league like DPL is better with less travel, and they still had national events. ECRL2 is going to be the same as DPL for Surf, hardly any league games that offer real competition. So that still leaves a big gap on player development, a missed opportunity.

Maybe in a few years, after almost everyone currently playing club has wasted their time and money, this will sort itself out and they will be in ECNL or real ECRL.

It seemed like there was an opportunity to put some of the best teams from DPL and NAL into an eastern New England league. But I'd guess that swirled down the loo once NEFC decided to act like GA and DPL were theirs to do what they wished.

This being a big eff you to NEFC is a minor plus of the plan, but that doesn't help the players in the near term.

It's too bad NEFC and their execs didn't see that they need other clubs to have a successful league and to have competition.

There is no point in having a league at all if it doesn't offer good competition. It's a waste of the players' time and the parents money.

How does this help Surf keep players? The best players are still going to feel the pull to play ECNL or ECRL.

Part of the equation for ECRL1 v ECRL2 is that all of the teams in ECRL1 also have ECNL, so the teams travel together for weekends, they share coaches and it makes the logistics work for the 4 clubs involved (2 traveling, 2 home) each weekend. Taking a team without ECNL into ECRL1 would mess up all of the travel arrangements so it will not happen. So ECRL2 has more than just quality of teams as their criterium. All that said, this is good long-term for Surf if they can rise their teams to be worthy of ECNL. Short-term it will upset the current teams by displacing families who are intentionally in DPL because they do not want to travel as much as the ECNL/ECRL/GA teams.

Until Surf can present a decade of strong college connections and placements, a drive to Lancaster will still be there preferred option. Since it will take 5+ years for any chance of promotion, JD will likely be nearing retirement age before that scenario arises.

There is no such thing as RL 2. It's either ECNL or ECNL Regional League. RL has many different conferences, but it's all the same league and same showcases.

Its like being in the AFC East, AFC West or NEFC South.

ok I don’t disagree ECRL has different regions but… the strongest ECRL teams are in the one called ECRL. Sooo maybe there’s still a difference. NE Surf is better than Scorpions teams, and most Stars teams they should not be playing the weaker ecrl teams in NY etc. Ie their 3rd teams.

Look at this state: Scorpions 3rd team, Bayside first team, Stars 5th team are in the ECRL called ECRL 2. NE Surf should be playing Stars blue and white ECRL teams, Select ECRL team, and whichever of Scorpions teams are their 2nd best team. NE Surf parents are mixed in reaction as they want to be part of ecnl but this means they have year of playing weaker competition than they played on DPL. Guess they have to pay their dues to get to ECNL/ECRL1 level.
