Why You Just Don't Put the Big Fat Kid at CB Anymore

    https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/...st-need-defend

Interesting article. I was fortunate to play CB from youth to an old man and lived the transition from "send it" to "keep it". I say, even after playing in college, I learned to really play when I was in my 30's and our men's team brought in players who taught us the joy of playing with it and not chasing after it.

The fastest player in the Premier League this season so far is a centerback

No the fat kid goes in goal.

Seriously tho... even in township ball the CB is usually one of the top players on the team. Unfortunately - in most cases they are told to kick it away.

Sure, at U8. By U13 that GK needs to be lean and agile

lol if you don’t have fast, athletic center backs how do you stop fast athletic forwards? Center backs are usually in the top 5 players on the team if the team is good.

This is a horrible post. So your saying bigger kids can't be strikers? mids? Come on. Your CB needs to be fast, athletic, quick response time, etc. What if they are bigger? Are you saying that if they have all those attributes of what a CB needs but are bigger they shouldn't be there.

Obviously some skinny kids parent is mad there kid isn't good enough to play CB.

Did you read the article and understand how the position has changed?

I mean if you count 30 years ago as change... which I will admit for a parent coach it should be required reading.

Did YOU read the article? It references a lot of recent activity, specifically in the last 7 years.

No, you're saying that. Read the post before jumping at other contributors.

becasue he plays for a team that defends with a suicidally high line and he has to chase back a lot. Put him in a race, and he is nowhere near that. Context matters.

By saying that you are also saying that all of the wide forwards in the league in 100+ games aren’t trying to run as fast as they can down the flank? That strikers on every through ball are just taking their time making their way toward goal. Yeah you are a soccer n00b.

Van Dijk and Walker have been fastest players in other recent years. I guess both their teams played suicidally as well.

Also I can totally see how a footballer would run slower in a race than they would chasing down breakaways. It just makes so much sense.
