Precious few parents seem to size up their daughter's talent objectively and target schools where they can be successful. As a result these clinics get get flooded by players who typically have no shot at all of playing in the program so the parents get frustrated wth the clinic and complain it don't work. They most certainly work if you pick the right level program. Except for the very cream of the crop, almost every player I know that has played in college got discovered through one of them.
To some extent the current club system accomplishes this for the girls. That doesn't mean that all the top D1 prospects are in the ECNL, but the reality is that most are. The rest play an extensive club schedule and travel a lot. In any given year there are between 25-35 girls from Massachusetts that land on D1 rosters. Most stay in New England, but those New England D1 programs identify and evaluate those players at "national" or "regional" events. A few do it primarily via ODP, but the number of players following that path (exclusively) is now really small. I don't know of a single recent non-club player that ended up in D1. There may be some that were (are) capable, but until one does it, then we can't consider it even a remotely viable path.

There is a lot of variation in D1, but the way they recruit is relatively consistent - even if the "who" they recruit is different. Not so in D2 - and certainly D3. Videos, camps and even HS play are all critical to most D3 recruiting. Many still attend club tournaments (even some of the National "Biggies") but even good D3 programs will see kids that simply show up at open try-outs... make the team and contribute. In all levels, getting seen and expressing interest is critically important but coaches don't have infinite time and resources to recruit - so the D1 coaches go where the players are and where the best players are being "developed" and that is high level club.

Our oldest daughter was identified late in the recruiting cycle via a clinic. She showed better in free play than on her very structured, conservstive club team.
This is dead on right. Cound't agree more.

        Good synopsis.

Actually it is not. The bottom line is it is the level of talent that dictates EVERYTHING. The level of club and the places that club take their players are just the packaging. The packaging is important for sure but it never over shadows the level of talent. No amount of fancy packaging will make a player more attractive to a college coach than their talent warrants.

If this were true, wouldn't all players recruited to D1 succeed?

The packaging is precisely why so many fail. There is a tendency now to over sell prospects and put more stock in the name of a program than in the fit. Lots of kids end up committing to programs where they will never see the field but don't realize it until they get there. The proof is in the high transfer rates. The blame for that needs to be shared between the parents and club coach. Someone needs to be objective.

Absolutely not. Just like many First round, Second round and Third round draft choices don't succeed in the NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. (and conversely, many later round "oh-by-the ways", DO).

And let's not forget that those "recruits" in the former category (i.e, the top draft choices) are continually "showcased" on all the "top" college teams and readily "seen" weekly by would-be recruiters (and even casual fans, for that matter) on national television, if not in person...

The responsibility needs to be shared in greatest part by the student and college coach, and to a much lesser part by parents and club coach. The student should best be able to gauge, by a number of indicators, whether they seem like a good fit soccer-wise. Those indicators include 1) watching the college team play, 2) attending the college coach's camp, 3) seeing where older players in their school experience (both teammates and opponents) fit at college. This should lead to a pretty informed judgement, which should then be confirmed by whether the college coach shows interest. From there, whether the student plays much depends a lot on the player. They need to understand that most college coaches carry a bigger roster of 25-30 than the 18-20 they were used to in club and school. To play much, you have to be in the top 1/2 of the college roster.

Have you actually raised a child to the high school ages in recent years? In a world filled with helicopter parents and svengali coaches there are very few children that have the maturity and life experience to make the sorts of decisions you are suggesting. Don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting that no one is capable of making such a decision, just that they would be in an extremely small sized group. Whether you personally raised yours to make their own decisions doesn't mean that the majority of kids today rely don't upon their parents and coaches to help frame their college choice.

You need to encourage your child to be their own advocate and make their own choices or they will fail miserably. They need to be the one contacting coaches, following up with coaches, researching the teams, researching the academic programs, and ultimately figuring out if the college is a place where they want to spend 4 years. They need to decide if they want to go to a big program and possibly sit on the bench, go to a smaller program and be a contributor, or somewhere in between. They need to do some homework on the type of players that are being recruited at the college to determine if they would fit in. Obviously, as a parent, you can give a reminder and help to guide them. Did you send an email? Did you send a thank you note? Did you look into that clinic? Do you want to go to this camp? Have you had a discussion with your coach? Hopefully they will start to figure these things out on their own as time goes on. Start with good habits that they can use as they continue on their search for the right fit.

The "results" that matter for these age groups will be determined by the number of email messages that players on the teams receive from coaches who might not otherwise have watched them play.

Exactly. That is why all these showcases are about.

Going to all the Late Nov early Dec north east events are useless because how cold it is out. The teams never show well and coaches don't get to see anything.

The ECNL event in Sanford an the Disney showcase offer good games in good weather.

More coaches are in Florida than anywhere else

I guaranty 90%+ of the plays would have been better off staying home and giving themselves a $2,500 scholarship in a year or two.

                                New England - 39 Teams - 52-58-20 GF:177 GA:194
                                COST: 39 Teams @20 Players Per @ $2,500 = $1,950,000

Do the results justify the cost?

if it is not your cost, why do you care.
By the way you got many of the rankings wrong. e.g. Blazers U16 beat a sub 100 team, crushed a 250th ranked team, lost to a sub 100 team, then beat a similarly ranked 110th team in the consolation match.

If you are going to ask the question, then ask whether or not club soccer is worth the cost. Blazer teams will pay around 10-12K per year including all tournaments and region 1.

But.......if it is not your dollar, then don't worry about it.
