Their process from first recruiting contact to last recruiting contact is probably longer because their commitments will typically be later but top d1 coaches start their scouting with 8th graders looking to get commitments late freshman year or later that summer. Very few, if any, d3 coaches start that early.
D3 coaches have to work harder at recruiting because they cannot offer anything more than admission help and have to wait to see who falls through the cracks to them. They have a completely different prospect than the top D1 people so the aggressive coaches will actually start working the bottom end of the pyramid quite early to figure out who might fall their way.
