She wasn't attempting any kind of political statement or expressing something that deserved to not be shut up. This wasn't "speaking your mind." This was "losing your mind" or more accurately "functioning without mind."

Wow, this thread got a lot of pages quick.
My daughter plays DIII soccer and as a freshman had to attend a social networking workshop with all other student-athletes at her school. It wasn't about just this type of stuff, but also the dangers for females in terms of what they put out there, how they present themselves in terms of employers and graduate schools, and on and on. In addition, each student-athlete at her school has to sign a social networking use agreement that outlines what is and is not acceptable. Again, this is at a DIII.
I am sure that BC has the same type of agreement and that it clearly outlined ramifications for this type of tweet (taunting, disrespectful towards an opponent, etc). I don't know her but I'd guess she wasn't intending to further hurt those already destroyed by the Penn State scandal, and instead was just trying to be the funny, cool kid on twitter. But the suspension was still correct. I'd add to it having her speak to incoming players about social networking as a bit of community service.
And maybe I live under a rock, but what happened to HB at Penn State? I didn't know she left.

What she did is not acceptable public behavior. Period.

This has nothing to do with sweeping something under the rug, they would be considered in bad taste if shared among a bunch a guys in a bar - as a student athlete representing BC in a public forum they went WAY beyond bad taste.

And if she has a "3.8 GPA", I would say there is a little grade inflation at the Heights

It's business school. Let's not confused that with an English Lit, Philosophy or pre-med curriculum.
