your child needs to be an impact player in their freshman year. this means different things at different programs and levels, but in most programs in all divisions they want to be in the top few freshman recruited, and barring injury, be playing well over 1/2 a game. otherwise by sophmore year they have a target on their back and junior and senior they sit so the coaches can assure the team has depth going forward.
even top, gatorade player of the year candidates have reached too high and been subs at major college programs. and this isn't just a top club problem. lesser clubs sell the dream hard, yet many of their players don't even get their feet in the door anywhere.
and the more versatile and skilled your child the better. coaches recruit players...not positions. if your child can play multiple positions well they are at a huge advantage over those that can't. high scoring forwards find themselves regularly converted to defenders and holding midfielders.
