usually we all complain the clubs don't do enough....once placed, it is up to each individuals hard work, abilities, and luck.

your child needs to be an impact player in their freshman year. this means different things at different programs and levels, but in most programs in all divisions they want to be in the top few freshman recruited, and barring injury, be playing well over 1/2 a game. otherwise by sophmore year they have a target on their back and junior and senior they sit so the coaches can assure the team has depth going forward.

even top, gatorade player of the year candidates have reached too high and been subs at major college programs. and this isn't just a top club problem. lesser clubs sell the dream hard, yet many of their players don't even get their feet in the door anywhere.

and the more versatile and skilled your child the better. coaches recruit players...not positions. if your child can play multiple positions well they are at a huge advantage over those that can't. high scoring forwards find themselves regularly converted to defenders and holding midfielders.

With respect to the overall discussion, the mindset behind the post brings up one of the problems with the youth soccer industry. The clubs seem to focus everyone on the brand name of the school or the rank of the program and very little focus is put on finding the best fit for individual player. What we are looking at is a 67% failure rate. That is awful. It is impossible to know everyone's individual situation to know why they chose their school and none of us really have any idea whether kids got hurt or something else happened but wouldn't you think a coach would have pulled just a few of those 10 kids aside and told them that they were reaching beyond their abilities. It is rather amazing how no one looks backwards and holds the people who were advising these players accountable for helping to put them in a losing situation.
I completely agree. But I think colleges also tend to go with the "brand name" of the player. Many of these player rankings, HS rankings, club team rankings, and accolades are just plain BS. Once you get "star" stamped on your forehead early on, many are just pushed through, long after the shine has faded.

Tough business. You can go to archives on their respective websites if you want the actual names. Some very good MA players there.
Yeah, and of the remaining 5 players, they all together started 5 games this year out of a total of 18 possible starts.

Oh now I see. These are Men's D1 names we are talking about. Thought this was a thread for women when I saw the google link for soccer recruits.

yikes. not great odds. remember there are 10 field players, so the coaches only need to discover 2.5 solid starters per class, 2 per class if you factor in redshirts. so when 8 players head to umass, just to pick on them for a minute, it's pretty much guaranteed 6 will be out of luck before even considering out of state and foreign recruits.

the other advice to give your kid is they better smile and be ready to work once they arrive on campus. when a few players are relatively equal, typically the hardest worker and least high maintenance gets rewarded.

Although finding time and keeping your roster spot is never easy there are special circumstances in the UMass situation.

Jim Rudy "retired" suddenly in May 2009. He'd done very little recruiting for more than a few years. Napoli was there for an interim year. The team had fallen far from its heyday.

When Matz took over, the depth of talent just wasn't there. When a program is actually rebuilding under a new coach(as in improving, not just making excuses), there will usually be a number of players that don't fit the vision of the new coach.

                  Mr Belmont

what happened to NP at BU he seemed destined to be
an impact player. I am surprised on the other hand to
see MW still involved, always thought he was overrated.

A bumpy road for him. I will not give details because it is inappropriate, but suffice to say he is off the team this year. MW is playing some; very solid, and a tri-captain this year. The only senior left on the team.

The women are finding much more success!

If the same analysis were done for women, they have 7 of 8 initial players still on the roster, versus 5 of 15 for the men. Much better ratio but half of the men's starting number. Key point is that BU has recruited no MA players in the past two years. Pretty hard to lose anyone if you have none.

Additional point. While BU did not recruit any MA Soph/Juniors, they have recruited a lot this year. That year was not in my analysis.
