Being a Norwood Mustand Alum from the 80's, hard to believe they would EVER have a winning soccer team boys or girls. The only time I ever saw someone playing soccer in Norwood growing up was the immigrant guys playing on weekends at Father Mac's.Originally posted by Unregistered View Post

Experienced girls soccer team kicks it into high gear
Needham — .The Needham girls soccer team seemed to come together as a unit near the end of last season. Entering a second-round playoff game against Bishop Feehan, the Rockets looked poised to defeat a tough opponent and continue their run. A Bishop Feehan sudden-death overtime goal later, Needham found itself with a 9-5-5 record and the season over.
Not all was lost in that game, as the girls continued to bond and play well, something that will certainly help as the team enters a 2009 year which looks to hold great promise. Although Needham lost its three captains from last year’s squad, it returns 15 seniors, nine juniors and a sophomore and — likewise — is loaded with experience.
“We were a young team last year, so we are able to bring back a good nucleus this season,” said Needham head coach Carl Tarabelli. “We need to be able to get everyone involved this season and stay healthy.”
Getting all players on the same page and involved in the game has been the early focus in practice. With so much skill and experience on this year’s club, Needham is hoping to make itself a multifaceted team that cannot be slowed by an opponent focusing on solely one player.
Of course, there are always certain players a team looks for to get it started and control play, and this team is no different. It starts with Coleen Rizzo, one of three senior captains who returns from an ACL injury in 2008 as the team’s top offensive threat. Joining her as a senior captain is Kristine Salans, another forward who will look to bury the ball in the back of the net with consistency. Rounding out the captains is Megan Conley. Conley is an in interesting situation, as off-season hip surgery will keep her sidelined for the entirety of the 2009 schedule.
Yet, do not think that she is not an integral member of this season’s team.
“[Rizzo] has been healthy and strong in the preseason, and keeping that will be critical. Her and Kristine [Salans] will be the two leaders up front putting the ball in the net,” said Tarabelli. “Megan [Conley] is a three-year starter and remains very involved. She coordinated a lot of the optional off-season programs, and has been like an assistant coach through tryouts and practice.
“From a high school standpoint, so much happens off the field with bonding and chemistry, so she is very important,” added Tarabelli.
Needham is also ready for contributions from some younger players — in particular, a group known as the “Big 3.” Defensive player Courtney Steeves, and midfielders Danielle Salans and Kathryn Rayner, have been playing varsity soccer for their first two years in high school. The juniors enter their third year of varsity play ready to make some noise on the field.
As far as expectations, Needham is keying in on league play. Finishing third last season, the team feels that this is the year to take the next step in a tough Bay State Conference.
“We are in a very competitive Bay State Conference; it is one of the best leagues in Massachusetts,” said Tarabelli. “The kids set the bar high, and they want to finish better than the third place we finished in last year. We want to make a run at the Bay State Conference title, and the key to our success is staying healthy. We can’t afford to lose anyone.”
While the club looks to keep its players fresh and involved — while also building team chemistry — make no mistake that the Rockets are excited for what lies ahead.
“It is a great group of kids and a great nucleus,” said Tarabelli. “It was a heartbreaking loss last year, but the team really came together. We are very much excited.”Comment
