Three ways to live in town A and play for Town B. First is to go METCO. Second is via school choice. Both of these are acceptable and legal under MIAA rules. There are some pretty clear examples of teams being helped significantly by both. The most notable girls soccer example has been the last couple of Newburyport editions. Their best player (and purportedly a few others) were not from N-Port and attended the school via school choice. The third way is to lie about your residency. Common game is to register using a realitve's address although there are examples of people "renting" apartments and using this as your legal residency for school. Some districts believe that as many as 5% of their students actually "reside" out of district. Almost all are there not because of sports but to escape the difficulties of their "home" urban districts. With numbers like this it is difficult to care mush about the occasional player thinking that they are better off with a certain district because of girls soccer.

You are spot on; the other thing to remember that for the most part the MIAA is not an almighty enforcement agency. The MIAA relies on self-enforcement so unless a school pushes an issue or ask for ruling nothing happens. The foolish thing so subjective anyway, how is it fair that Catholic schools have no geographic limitation yet are competing for the same state championships.
