If the statistics are as you say - why the bright eyed u-15, u-16, and u-17 parents at every showcase? Are 5-6 parents on every club deluded or is it something else?
They have drunk the Koolaid and are not realistic about their son's talent level when it comes to D1 College soccer, nor are they aware that there is very little athletic aid in Men's college soccer, thus don't plan on a soccer scholarship. Put your effort into the classroom and the books as there is much more academic scholarship $$ available than soccer $$. Very few Mass boys go on to play D1 college soccer, while large numbers % do play D3. The recently graduated HS soccer playing numbers back this up. The D2 and D3 college coaches are at these College Showcases also, thus if you can use soccer as the vehicle to gain acceptance into the college of choice for your son (D1 or D2 or D3) then congrats!

You peple WAY overstate the number of parents who actually think their kids are going to get a scholarship at a D1 school to play soccer. Please stop perpetuating this stereotype. The families are not chasing free rides. After 12 years in high level club, ODP, and college soccer environments, this has rarely been a serious topic of discussion among parents.

You must be kidding. While I've only been involved in club for 10 years, and not 12, my experience is totally different. My experience is that more than 50% of the parents of kids at the lower age of true premier (u-14, u-15, and a little of the u-16 ages) have scholarship hopes and certainly will express them to you if you converse openly. But no parent wants to sound like they are chasing the dollars - so the discussions they have are conducted to tactfully to avoid such a perception. The percent diminishes over the next two years and become somewhat more realistic once the kids are in their junior year of high school because the reality is really set in. So whether there scholarship hopes are for D1 or D2 its really irrelevant. If the actual percent of kids going to those schools is 20%, then almost any conversation about getting sports money seems distorted relative to the actual stats.

By the way, I was at a recent college coaches forum for parents where there were college coaches discussing the recruiting process. They themselves took almost 20 minutes trying to reinforce to the group that there isn't as much money as parents think there is, that almost no one gets a full ride, etc etc. Why do they take such time to emphasize it over and over with a group of 100 + parents if they are not aware that there is such a perception out there.

No surprise. CA leads the way with NY next. VA best per capita. MA in the middle.

So there you have it. Mass has 4 boys who are likely to receive some significant soccer scholarship athletic aid. So for those out there in the younger age groups look at last years HS Class of 2011 and this years HS Class of 2012 and note that very few HS boys from Mass will receive much if anything to play D1 college soccer. There will likely be another 5 to 7 who will play D1 from this years class, however not likely getting much if any significant athletic aid. So for those who are running to the DAP in hopes of a D1 men's soccer scholarship--don't fool yourself and keep it in perspective--D1 is probably not going to happen, and certainly highly unlikely with any athletic aid.

More and more will pop up as acceptances get mailed over the next few weeks. I also assume that a number will keep it to themselves as the public flogging is unavoidable. Congratulations to these players . . . well done.
