That's great for these boys. What does a "verbal" commitment mean? Do they still have to go through the typical application process? Does it mean they need to maintain grades, etc... to actually attend the school?

It is a handshake agreement so that the player agrees to stop looking elsewhere. The real deal comes around next Feb when they sign a national LOI. These things usually work out. They still have to get accepted by the school academically. But the coaches usually know that drill and will study their portfolio to make sure that they are not wasting each other's time. In my experience, once they see a player of interest, academics is the first thing they ask about. A verbal commit is not a license to sit back and crash on your grades. Admission will note that.

At D1 schools the admissions office will review the academic record-to-date (remember a lot can happen between now and actual admssion) and verbally green light the student and even issue an "admissibility" letter prior to the student making a verbal commitment.

At this point, a student should feel really confident about admission assuming they will keep their grades at an acceptable level from this point onward and both the player and the coach don't have a change of heart about things.

Typically this blows up much more frequently because the player has a change of heart.

As the OP for 2012 and 2011, note that latter thread below. 4 D1 commits in Mid Nov just as here. I suspect that is a combination of people/schools not getting the word out, plus the depth Div1 and D2/3 players rolling out soon. In 2-3 months there will be 50 kids on the list (I hope).

There will be significantly more names come March (final destinations), however don't expect to find more than 10 heading to D1 as that seems to be the average. Based upon the HS Class of 2011 numbers you can expect to see 100 to 125 Mass boys play college soccer with roughly 80% playing D3, 8% playing D1 and the remaining 12% D2. Give or take +_ it should be about the same for HS Class of 2012. good luck to class of 2012, hopefully you will enjoy your senior year.

Help me understand your numbers. If only about 20% go to D1 or D2 schools, then that comes out to around 2-4 players per club roster. If that's true, then why are there maybe 7-10 player parents on every roster who seem to be looking for monies from athletics. It seems to me that there is a disconnect between the two. If the statistics are as you say - why the bright eyed u-15, u-16, and u-17 parents at every showcase? Are 5-6 parents on every club deluded or is it something else?
