    Re: MIAA Rules

I had this email forwarded to me. Has to do with rule changes for next year.

    Current Soccer Rule:

77.1.5 Mouth guards are required for all soccer players while on the field.

    Proposal:

Mouth guards are highly recommended for all soccer players while on the field.

    Verbiage for justification:
“The “highly recommended” language currently exists for the sport of basketball, a sport with a higher incident rate of orofacial injuries than soccer, so it would be logical and equitable to adopt the same language for soccer mouth guards.”

    In the same document:

    Current Basketball Rule:

66.1 Mouth guards are highly recommended for all basketball players while on the court.

    Proposal:

Mouth guards are required for all players in boys’ and girls’ basketball.

      Re: MIAA Rules

I believe that the various committees that must weigh in on any proposal have been favorable to changing the soccer rule but not favorale to changing b-ball.

I agree but you would think MIAA would be on top of this stuff.

Not all proposals for rule changes come from within the MIAA. In fact, most come from outside the MIAA administration. They are from members or one of the various standing committees (like the soccer committe or medical committee). Once a rule change is proposed it goes through a review process and is voted on by the various standing committees. Those votes are basically there to give opinion and guidance about the proposal. Very few of these proposed changes are implemented. So it is not inconsistent to have proposals that represent alternate views on an issue (in this case mouth-piece use). I agree that what will likely occur is that the b-ball proposal will fail but the soccer rule will succeed. Leaving both sports with mouth-guards being "highly recommended"

This was posted on the MIAA site but I agree the soccer rule will be changed
