Because our best players waste each Fall on high school soccer, where they start to play like crap. The best kids in Florida and California play club year round.

I live in FL.
HS soccer is very big down here.
But we do play soccer (or whatever sport you choose) 11 months a year. We only take off July to go to the beach. So, we get pretty good at sports.
Of course there is a price to pay. With all that time spent on the sports fields, our kids can barely read or write.

Weather for year round play, larger population and a much large immigrant, soccer player population.

This sentiment is the one I hear all the time.
CA and TX have the best teams.
It is sometimes said that FL produces the most top players, but never the most top teams. And that is usually attributed to the overpopulation of clubs down here. There are literally hundreds of clubs in this state.
BTW, as for the immigrant influence...
Despite our reputation for having a strong Mexican influence on our population (largely do to the agricultural economy), our clubs are mostly lilly white. Very noticeable pay-for-play influence. It's a shame in my opinion. If anything, the immigrant influence that you see here is in the coaching staffs. Our clubs employ immigrants from all over the world!

Florida creates the biggest number of top players? Not for girls. There may be a disproportionate number of Florida players that play for in-state Florida college programs, but that will change as the Bright Futures program is de-emphasized. It has always been surprising that Florida (with its population and weather advantages) hasn't been better in soccer.

We live in VA. In my daughter's age group (U12) the Florida teams are not strong, with one or two execptions. I agree about CA and Michigan also has excellent teams in this age group. FLA...not so much.

This is the FL guy again.
Look, I didn't say "I think" FL produces the best players. I only said that even people down here don't talk about FL producing the best TEAMS. Instead, they talk about trying to produce the best players...and there are some statistics that support the FL model (many small clubs instead of a few large clubs) producing a disproportionately large number of college level players given the population.
That said, CA is the hands down winner for producing elite players. No state comes close.
Take a look at the current rosters for the usmnt and uswnt. CA might as well have it's own teams. And second place goes to NJ of all places! lol Must be something going on with the girls up there???

As noted earlier we have alot of club play which dillutes the quality of teams in Florida. But if you look at the top players you'll see alot of kids from Florida. Katie Stengle, #1 rated Freshman in College, FL. Former UNC Goalie for 2009 national champions, National High Schoool Player of the Year: Florida girl. That is just 2 of Many. Oh Yea I forgot, Melbourne High School girls Rated by espn rise #1 in the Nation 2009/10. That school is in Florida. It is due to population. The more people you have to choose from the more quality you get. That is all. Same reason why HS football in better in Fl, Texas, California.
