    What if...

What if you are already qualified for State Cup in the Spring, you have 3-4 new players on your team and it really doesn't matter to the coach about results ( defined as score only).
As the coach you are worried about tactics- formations- and getting your players to work as a unit. You have a strong team, good bench and history of strong play- never finishing lower than 3rd in your division and always a candidate for State Cup (and or Andre/Irwin Cup)- You want your team to gel and work on many different things in game situations and because of this try different formations, try to get new players acclimated to multiple positions at the expense of some more established players, and sometimes winning the game.

Your parents (from hence in the post referred to as nutjobs) cant see the forest from the trees and worry only about the final score, how their little Ronaldo or Marta played, their playing time and if they scored or assisted. They certainly dont understand the differences in a 4-4-2 to a 4-5-1. Have no clue as to an overlapping run let alone a flat back 4. But they are vocal parents who if not happy will bitch and complain to anyone that will listen, other parents on the team, other parents not on the team, the DOC, the Coach, the barber, etc.....
The nutjobs used to see their child win- play all game- get praise for being just so fantastic- are now seeing less playing time, the kids not winning every game and the praise just not happening for every run, shot or good play- and threaten to leave - talk to doc to move up to another level (age group) in which their child OF COURSE- should be in anyway. They Get more uneducated nutjobs rilled up as well and there is dissent on the club of a really good club who have a shot at State Cup.

    What do you do?

    Thanks in advance ...

The coach needs better communications with the parents and it must be BEFORE there are problems which means anticipating what those problems are. You have outlined some very common issues, so the coach should have been prepared ahead of time. Most parents will buy in to what a coach is doing if they understand the reasoning behind the coach's decisions. Reasonable people will even go along with it even if they might not necessarily agree. However, ther is always a small percentage of parents that just don't get that it's not all about them and their kid. They are a cancer to a team and must be dealt with quickly and often times harshly..

This happened to our U12 team, and it was painful. Growing pains often are. The coach sent a long email to the team parents explaining what he was working on, and he told the kids as well. He began praising them after games not for a win, but for the successful use of the new strategies and techniques. They got it, and came off the field and basically told the parents to take a chill pill, which most of them did. About five games later, the team won with a far superior soccer game -- good possession, good positioning, and a good win. The kind of win that means you are really to go head to head with the best. At that point, the parents REALLY got it, but I have to admit, it got ugly there for a while.

hmmmmm.... sounds like a team I know of. I think the parents should talk to their kids about what is worked on in training, talked about in the pregame/halftime/postgame talks, and then if there are still questions as to the coach's thought process then a face to face meeting would be in order.

So you have an intelligent coach also?

I hate the idiots that change tactics to win, teach kick and run and coach like every game is life or death. It puts too much pressure on players and then when the time comes to "rev it up" and to play to win, they don't know how because it's been ingrained in them that every game is the biggest game.

Sounds like I want to play for your team!

State Cup RR guarantee, sounds like staying in D1 is going to be a lock, encourage the coach to keep doing what he/she is doing. F. results, they will come if the message to the players is consistent and full of quality.

Just for kicks: is your coach licensed? If so, what level(s)?

Sounds like the right approach... even though parents are fixated on results... it's the teams that focus on long-term development that will eventually overtake a lot of others.

What level? Well from what I have heard- almost all levels with the nutjob parents- who know nothing of the game.

Who does this- from the sounds of this board- just about everyone
