Japanese military is limited by treaty. But, they are trying to push the USA out. NATO protects Europe, as well as local country militaries.

But, that's not the point. WE have a military that is ten times bigger than China, or Russia, or anyone else, yet we increase spending. That's a poor choice. We are a democracy, why is our war budget so huge?

Anyway, all of these countries spend less as a total of their GDP than we do, much less. You say we can't afford it, but we are currently spending much more. Also, quit with the Republican lies. Social Security is funded. We all pay into it from the day we start working. It's not my fault the Republicans chose to steal from it and use the money as part of the general fund.

So, the deal is, single payor for all costs less than our system of healthcare. It is not only the best choice for our human rights, our welfare, and our well being, it's also the best choice from the perspective of being fiscally conservative.

The American middle class is not significantly better off than the Western European middle class if you include how they live. With healthcare paid for, 35-hour workweeks, generous maternity leave, 4+ weeks of paid vacation, and way fewer schoolkids killed in mass murders, it's a wash. Except their babies are less likely to die and they will live longer whilst not going bankrupt because of medical bills.

You need to update yourself on China and the military there. In the last decade they have increased their budget, and the weapons they are spending on are mostly advanced. They have increased the size of their footprint, claiming more and more disputed land. Building bases. Fortifying their Navy big time.

NATO is mostly us. Our dollars. Our bases. Let's bring all our troops home, what will happen to the local economies there? heck, Trump had to go make a collection call to NATO< they haven't paid their fair share in years, if ever.

Social Security was raided. There isn't anything but an IOU. Mid 2030's is when more will go out than will come in.

I never said Social Security is an entitlement. It is a contract. And I support it 100 %. The problem is that is was raided many years ago , and all that was left was an IOU. It will still be " broke " by the mid 2030's.

If we want desalinization plants, and we will need them as the GOP continues to pollute our groundwater, then build them, not subs. Aircraft carriers are great and huge and easy targets. Defense spending doesn't have to go up even if costs do. We don't need such a massive military. We don't need to be invading as much as we invade. As you point out, we don't need to overspend on NATO. And, you are right. Make trade schools and colleges free. Probably costs less than an aircraft carrier and a dozen F35s anyway.

Following the war, an enormous amount of research was done to make synthetic rubber, allowing the military to be much better equipped during WWII.

Super Glue - During WWII, a researcher worked with a substance that he had hoped to use to make plastic gun sights, but found it to be much too sticky. A few years later during the Korean War, he was working on a way to make jet canopies heat resistant, and his forgotten substance was brought back to life. While it didn't provide the heat resistance he was after, it did adhere two prisms together very tightly during testing, making him finally realize what he had.

This "super glue" was an excellent adhesive that didn't need the heat, pressure, and drying time that many other glues needed, making it desirable for soldiers in a hurry. It has also been said that the glue was used in Vietnam as a way to temporarily seal wounds.

Canned Food - Because food spoils so easily, mobile military units have long looked for ways to preserve it, like salting it and storing it in glass vessels. In the 1800s, preserving food in lightweight tin cans became popular. During WWI, morale was boosted by increasing the diversity of canned food, giving soldiers a real meal that wouldn't spoil during shipment.
