- More substantial penalties for employers who hire illegals. Really make it hurt. No available jobs is a great deterrent.

-Expand programs for unskilled workers to come on short term stints with vetting, tracking etc (he has shrunk it greatly yet uses it himself). Allowing them to come here legally means they are no longer illegal. Hire more staff and technology to track them. We need cheap labor. It's a fact. Workers on these visas cannot access welfare programs and must pay taxes.

-Spend more on staff and technology to track the nearly 70% of illegals who come here on legal tourist and student visas and stay. They are the biggest issue, not border crossers. Annual border crossings have been in decline since a peak in 2008.

- Beef up border patrol. Its cheaper and more effective than a breachable wall.

-Eliminate birth right citizenship. You can only be a US citizen if one parent or 2 grandparents are citizens. We're one of only a few countries that still allow it.

You view it as petty, his voters view it as fighting for them. He should be angry. Immigration has been a political football for decades. This discussion should be transparent and public.
