Football is the driver behind this. The findings of the link to the heart is scaring coaches, especially since so many of them look the other way with the "diets" the players are on to grow and get stronger. Put the two together and it is a recipe for death.

Christ I take Covid seriously but not to that extreme gloom and doom. Football has 1) much more sustained contact, 2) larger teams = more players to possibly infect = more school spread 3) more players = big transportation issues. Nor does it help that basically all college football is closing down. School boards and parents know it. Unlike in other states CT football has their panties in a bunch about playing in the spring. Guess what? Not everyone gets what they want in any of this. As it is soccer had an abbreviated season and probably no playoffs either. All sports are going to be modified but all should be played (except wrestling).

practices not games...which also begs the question why do they get to start so much earlier?

I never said games, I simply replied to the question of what was being paused.

They got to start a little earlier, not a lot. I believe it was due to more conditioning time needed?

Soccer players don't need conditioning? If football was supposed to start this week then that's 2+ weeks ahead of soccer. Makes no sense. All sports should be on the same timelines. Of course, little the CIAC does makes much sense.

It was 10 days, not 2+ weeks.

First day of conditioning in cohort groups of 15 for football was supposed to be 8/17, all other sports 8/27. First full team practice dates, first scrimmage dates, first regular season game dates were all the same for all sports.

They then put a temporary “pause” in place last week.

                Try to keep up.

Thank you for the clarification - hard to keep up when it changes all the time. But that still doesn't explain why football gets a head start. They also don't have all their games jammed into a shorter season like soccer does. Wusses :) .

I agree it’s ridiculous how much it’s changing. And I agree about football, not sure of the reasoning on the 10 day conditioning head start?

Ohio Governor gives 👍 for fall sports including football.
Mike DeWine says spectators will be limited to family members and others "very close" to the athletes. Will be up to the schools to determine who fits that criteria.

Football requires conditioning to start earlier because there is a phase in process before full pads and full contact. They spend weeks just working on proper form tackling to avoid head and spinal cord injuries. I would say that they deserve the extra practice time

football has always started earlier its not for conditioning its for reps
do you know how many times a football team runs one play over the course of a season
its hundreds and some teams run 80 plays in their playbook- never mind specials,2 min,4 min, situational etc...
unlike soccer- football runs in 6 second intervals- you need to get 11 people to do their job at the exact same time in those 6 seconds- its choreography
soccer is fluid- soccer players need conditioning more but the game isnt scripted like football
its more read and react. soccer is a much more fluid game and a lot of it can be coached on the fly

                              Today's COVID-19 update in Connecticut: 8/18

➡️10,760 tests were administered and 40 came back positive
                              ➡️This is a 0.37% positivity rate
➡️47 patients are hospitalized (increase of 5)
➡️Thankfully, no COVID-related deaths were reported

This is a very typical day for CT. the last two months have been this way.
So why the delay for sports?
Seriously how are things going to improve for the spring?

That's stupid! At this age, if you cant tackle properly (or do technical things in soccer), you will never learn. Are high school players standing around shooting all day and juggling (sorry, i withdraw that question! :)). The point of early training for football is certainly conditioning, but every sport needs that ..... the thing different for football is learning a playbook. Tons of repetition and plays for 11 players to learn to work together. So many formations and dozens of players to run out of or against.
