Looking at your DA link, it looks like there are only 4 other teams in their conference. Looks like a lot of teams in northeast don’t field teams in that age group.

op here and yeah you're right. Not so sure giving up HS is worth it for that? I'm curious to see what OW commits look like this year. We went and watched a game and weren't exactly blown away by OW or the other team.

Why would you ever advise your kid to give up playing HS sports with their friends/classmates. No one, I repeat, no one in the state is going to make a living playing soccer. USSF is experimenting with our kids and I hear, they are considering wide sweeping changes. They will go residential with a few, not some league for the masses. A kid in the DA at Oakwood, can be an impact player in HS, be a captain, play in front of 1000 people in the community. Not sure, why we are letting them take this away from us.

USSF was pushed to start GDA by the current political environment....equal pay, equal opportunity etc for women. These forces were strong and swept over common sense. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

op here - our HS program sucks, bigly, and she wants more of a challenge. But she adores her HS teammates too and certainly is an impact player. We're just talking about it, no decisions yet by any stretch. But seeing how few games they play for U19 is a big turnoff. It's not like the training at OW is that great.

High school soccer is terrible, and your lucky if you can get 1000 people to watch the games in the whole season combined. High school soccer equals bad habits ... kick and run

In club you're lucky if you get 6 parents, 2 dogs and 1 grandparent dozing in a folding chair at a game. Plenty (most?) of clubs teach kick and run as well. When you're talking about OW vs playing HS+other good club? OW isn't special and isn't all that appealing, even more so since the NE GDA is so bad.

High school sports are such a fun part of the experience. Nobody around here going pro! Travel all over and never have your family together? These years go by fast.

Unfortunately for some kids who are serious about soccer, hs is not all that. Some don't see it as something being taken away, but as a better alternative being given. Don't assume that all girls hs programs are as enjoyable as your daughter's.

                          Agreed.

The broad generalizations on this website are laughable. It's an individual decision based on individual needs. If your kid is having fun, developing each day, learning valuable life lessons, etc., that's all that matters. It's not one size fits all. There are many paths (DA, ECNL, EDP, CCSL, CJSA, NPL, HS) and plenty of clubs to fill all needs.

Each family, and each player has a conscious choice on where they will try to play based on what's important to them as individuals.

That is true. But given how many have stayed out of GDA to begin with and the fact that many are getting waivers (official and unofficial) so they can keep playing HS tells me HS wins 75% of the time. And this is OW and the NE GDA we're talking about; only OK on a good day. It isn't nearly the same thing as playing on the boys side for say NYCFC. THAT you give HS up for.

They are not CONSIDERING anything .... they are being forced to react to the MLS clubs forcing their hand and relegating them to 2nd class outsiders (if not further down that list). They have had 10 years and only succeeded in draining other clubs resources with very negative results. MLS is done with their experiment and couldn't care less going forward what USSF thinks.

We get over 1,000 every night game for boys and girls games .... want far less than 1,000 spectators a year .... go to academy games ..... there are 2 teams worth of players and coaches, and refs .... that's it. It's nice to see kids representing their schools and towns. Sorry the other poster's school is not good in soccer ... ours is and our kids love it and the competition that comes along with it .... and when they go back to club, they do get something different and love that perspective too.
