That is the aau model. Not some exclusive 10k a year Ecnl club. Shutting out all the kids that can’t afford big money is beyond a joke.

Watching the US-HON game last night for a bit and was left wondering how many of them spent the bulk of their teen years in Europe rather than on some melting turf in Florida.

That what ECNL was when it started. Tournament based circuit for the best teams. The problem is that there's too many teams that pretend to be elite.

AAU also is a much different model in that the sneaker companies bankroll their tournaments & tours.

I dont know....digging into this briefly it looks like these Nike, UA, and Adidas circuit AAU teams are pretty expensive, attract top talent and have a ton of travel involved. I am sure there are good AAU teams out there for less money, but how do those teams differ from our town teams?

It seems like the difference might be the middle tier. In soccer, mid level premier will still cost you thousands because of the allure (or benefit) of professional coaches.

Most inexpensive AAU is still going to be daddy coached, thus cheap, but not tied to your geography so you can actually build a decent team. So maybe its this adherence to town lines that creates the need for those middle/bottom level premier teams.

BDA/GDA always had tryouts much later (although hot prospects were usually invited to practices). Not sure about MLS+ and GAL now.
