USSF is a hot mess; look at the debacle with GDA and now BDA was blown up also. Elite clubs have too much say in the process. We used to a better job finding talent when ODP actually was "a thing" but that's been many years ago now. ECNL and DA intentionally discouraged players from participating. Obviously soccer is too pricey for many families to participate over the long run. Plenty of kids drop out as the costs ramp up.

Is the GAL still a league? Now that is a true money grab. Clubs that nobody ever heard of are in that league and all the best clubs are begging out.
