I think most people see that lack of size outweighs talent most times, so while some kids may be pretty skilled they ultimately are not able to really contribute in games because of how easily they get bumped off the ball.

The only way small & skilled works is if everyone on the team is skilled and plays super fast. If any player slows the game down, the result is more physical play. What parents should look at is strength. IMO a player better be either really strong or really fast and if you are neither, your IQ better be like Pirlo's.

Again, small and skilled generally does not work in a vacuum. The moment the play slows down that kid becomes ineffectual. Frankly, the Europeans are structuring their teams around more physicality now, too. You are not going to see a 2010 barcelona type team again with 8 players all under 5'8" running around.

Now, if you are saying the days of the sterile possession of just dribbling w/ no purpose, then I wholeheartedly agree. But, we also aren't in the days of Stoke-ball, either.

fair play - but if we are talking girls soccer in CT, i would say it is going to be a very rare player who can be small and do well. She better be well above normal speed otherwise they get bumped off pretty easily. At that point, strength training can help but the reality is the girls game as they get to HS can be a drop slow and definitely very physical in what the refs allow.
