That's a whole other issue. It's a Fairfield county issue that affected the South team more because it pulled kids from New Canaan, Darien, Greenwich, Westport. etc. For these families $4k meant nothing and if the kid would rather go to a play date, birthday party or play a town rec sport on Sat/Sun then so be it. If it was cold or rainy the day of practice, no need to send young Thurston Moneybags III to rough it in the elements.

I could be wrong but wasn't it the South 07 team that had one dad & mom who had his/hers matching Bentley convertibles and at least 2 dads with 911T. When you have too much money you don't even notice that $4k went to an elite soccer program and you might want to get your money's worth.

Unrelated is the South team also had manager issues. I know of at least one occasion where families were given wrong information and showed up an hour late. I think there was also something about some families being sent to the wrong field.

I don't care how much money they got. Or how willing they are to part with it.

If a kid has an attendance problem, then I'm looking to replace that kid at the next tryouts.

And for certain there are ongoing consequences in season for poor attendance.....mostly a large loss of playing time.

If a parent is willing to pay $3,000 to have his 6 year old train at BS, you can be sure MK will allow the kid to miss practice and games. Everything will be fine as long as the BS coach allows the kid to take a 30 minute nap during practice.

It's a coach's responsibility to crack down on attendance slackers. Plenty of parents go into premier thinking it will be like a travel commitment. It's up to the clubs to tell them it isn't.

The big picture issue for the Greek is that he has always been reliant on hefty donations from the same parents of some of the kids with poor attendance. It’s tough to discipline the kid or crackdown with consequences when Daddy is handing over a $25k check for the BS facility or whatever project MK is selling them at the time. Leniency or outright ignoring of the problem always wins out.

Yeah what a message this sends to the other kids on the team who’s parents have to strictly put money away so there kid can play for a team like this. They show up day in and day out to work hard just for the rich kids to be able to let them down and affect there trainings and games.

What do I tell my son when he works his tail off, shows up to a game and only 7 players there?

Couldn’t be happier we left !

Amen - The coaching at our new club is so much better. At this age all I care about is the quality of the coaching and club, and the competition against other teams as well as within his own team. My only regret is that I wasted a few years of development at BS...

So which club are you at?

NYSC. A real club run by professionals. Not petty middle aged adolescents.

Both South and North had some wealthy families though I believe South had more of them. Yes, there were some Bentleys and 911s there but also a few pickups and minivans so its not just a question of money. A few years ago, a couple of the uLittle teams had some ridiculously wealthy families and there were no attendance issues.

There are other clubs that have wealthy families and dont seem to have issues with attendance. FCW has a ton of very wealthy families and aren't struggling for talent or attendance.

It's all about parent attitude and how a coach (or club) handles the slackers. These kids are old enough and at a level to be taught the meaning of commitment. Coaches have to be explicit about consequences and follow through on it. If the parents can't re-enforce those lessons with their own actions then the family shouldn't be there. It isn't fair to those who are committed and there's other kids/families who are committed and deserve a shot.

What are they doing with the money raised for the facility? I heard it was in seven figures?

What exactly qualifies these families as “wealthy”? What does a family who’s wealthy need to earn per year to be considered rich in your eyes?

                                Curious based on these comments.
