Sources: Kate Markgraf will not return as USWNT GM; decision predates World Cup

Kate Markgraf will not continue as general manager of the United States women’s national team, multiple sources confirm to The Equalizer. Markgraf’s departure was planned ahead of the World Cup and is not in reaction to the team’s exit in the Round of 16, multiple sources familiar with the matter confirmed.

Markgraf’s contract ends at the conclusion of August. She and U.S. Soccer discussed a contract extension at some point prior to the World Cup but Markgraf declined to sign one, multiple sources familiar with the situation tell The Equalizer.

Whether the U.S. women’s general manager role remains at all is a major question facing new U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker. U.S. Soccer announced on Thursday, in conjunction with the resignation of head coach Vlatko Andonovski, that Crocker will lead the search for the team’s next head coach. Markgraf will continue to help with the transition through the end of the month, a source familiar with the process said.

Sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the news has not yet been announced.
