US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer and AYSO Joint Statement

    Tick, tick, tick....

US Club Soccer, US Youth Soccer and AYSO members and participants,

In 2017, U.S. Soccer decided to change age group formation by school year (Aug. 1-July 31) vs. calendar year (Jan. 1-Dec. 31). Since the change was made, we have been reviewing the impact on our sport, specifically for players of all ages and competitive levels.

Over the past few months, U.S. Soccer, at the request of its Technical Development Committee, has engaged in a review of that decision. We support these efforts and appreciate their approach to engage Organizational Members, leagues and clubs in collecting feedback. Additionally, US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer and AYSO have solicited and shared additional feedback with one another in an effort to make the most informed and appropriate decision for our sport.

US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer and AYSO have been in constant communication on the topic, recognizing the importance of consistency across the three biggest youth soccer organizations in America. US Youth Soccer’s and US Club Soccer’s leadership teams have met in person multiple times, most recently in September at the US Youth Soccer Grassroots Symposium in Salt Lake City. Additionally, we welcome the involvement of other U.S. Soccer Organizational Members.

We believe that any decisions should be made as a collective with as many youth organizations as possible, and it is our intention to do so.

As chair and vice chair of the U.S. Soccer Technical Development Committee and Youth Representatives on the Board of Directors, Mike Cullina (US Club Soccer CEO) and Louis Mateus (US Youth Soccer Board of Directors member) are directly involved in the conversation and recommendation to U.S. Soccer’s Board of Directors. As chair of the Youth Council and Youth Representative on the Board of Directors, Tina Rincon (US Youth Soccer Board of Directors chair) is also actively engaged.

The next U.S. Soccer Board of Directors meeting is Nov. 22, 2024. We expect this topic to be on the agenda for that meeting and, consequently, a formal and public decision by the end of the calendar year.

As always, thank you for your passion for the sport and commitment to our athletes.

I checked my son's roster and half the players are born after 8/01. This team will be blown up as will every other team. Cannot imagine the sh*t show tryouts will be this year. I would not want to be a coach.

After the 2017 disaster, this is a stupid and unnecessary decision if they change it again.

Spot on. The people in charge don't want to make any of the obvious changes to improve youth soccer in the US, so they want to blow it up again like they did in 2017. God help us.

I really hope they don't do this. What exactly is the pressing issue that they need to address by reversing course again? Such bad leadership!

This would be a terrible thing to change! It would blow up every team in every club across the country!

What recruiting issues? US soccer doesn't have a problem filling up their player pool for national camp. They shouldn't care about any other recruitment

US Soccer is responsible for more than the National Team.

As a parent of a 4Q birthday player, players born after Sept end up losing half their 8th grade season due to Trapped players, and then they also lose their Senior year. So why not go to grade levels. Also, its very rare to see a player born after Sept. I can count on 1 hand in the last 4 years that my son had a teammate born in the second half of the year. Its very rare.

What recruiting issues? ie this year B09 teams that have Freshman/Sophmore/8th grade players on them. D1 can only talk to the Sophmore players. So if they go to a Showcase, the coaches dont know who they can talk to and cant talk to. It does create a mess.

Our played played in an 8th grade trapped league last year during the spring and had a blast. I understand that not every club offers that.

Curious how they lose their senior year? Aren't the oldest teams always 18 and 19 year olds?

The older players who are seniors graduate meanwhile the Jrs rising to Seniors have to JOIN a DIFFERENT team if they want to continue playing. Problem is the level below them are set at players.

It will be interesting to see how much this shakes things up. From my experience, about 75-80% of the younger age rosters (u15 and below) for the first team are comprised of players born 8/1 or earlier. However, the roster is the second team is much more balanced so I would anticipate seeing a big shift of 2nd team players coming down to play on-age and making the first team under these new rules. Not a good year to be jumping clubs at tryouts due to the significant changes at all clubs.
