    ECNL Changing Age groups

I just listened to the ECNL podcast which had the president and vice president talking about potentially going back to school year and made it sound that they are both against birth year.

Has anyone heard anything about this? They made it seem like a possibility for 25/26 season.

Who cares. It's just a patch.

That’s so funny. My child was held back a year in school. So what now, he’d have to play with younger players based on his grade level?

No (this makes sense why your kid was held back) age is determined by birth year. The proposed change is based on August to July age, to coincide with the school birth year.

This may be a silly question, what are the impacts for players, are there advantages/disadvantages to differ birth months or is it neutral once it shakes out? For example, if my child is a February 2011 birthday, smack in the middle of what a hypothetical new bracket would be - August through July, how does that impact him? Right now, most of his team is a rising 8th grader (like him) some are heading into 7th grade. He’s one of the bigger players. Would this shift just put him more into the middle of the age band, which I think would be fine with him. Several of his friends at school are 2010 so play on a different team, this might allow them to play together provided their birthdays were between August and July?

If there was no change, and teams stayed with birth year, because he is a February birthday, he’ll head to high school next season ahead of some teammates so he would not be “trapped” but his slightly younger teammates might is that correct? I’ve been seeing this proposed change floating around but still figuring how we would be actually impacted. Thanks!

The advantage of of August to July is most kids will be in the same grade. The only disadvantage is national teams are based on birth year.

I don't think it's that big of a disadvantage. National teams are all-star teams anyway. Not like they are playing with most of those guys the rest of the year.

I think all of what you wrote checks out, at least as far as I understand it.

For Sept-Dec birthdays there are two unique disadvantages with the current system. 1) When they're in 8th grade, the rest of the team is playing high school soccer, so they have to temporarily join a team of 8th graders with fall birthdays that's been cobbled together. 2) When these kids are seniors, their teammates for the past few years will have graduated and gone off to college, so they'll have to join the younger age group for their final season before college. Additionally there's the classic birth month disadvantage and least likely to get identified for development opportunities; but there will always be someone with that disadvantage whether you follow the calendar year or school year. Are all these things the end of the world?

The advantage of the calendar year, is the US U15 scouts don't have to go to games in two different age brackets to find all the kids born in the calendar year and eligible for international competitions.
