Picking the right players wasn’t the issue. Playing the right players and playing them in the correct positions seems to be.

I don't know anything about the current Academy players, but when my son played for them, winning wasn't necessarily the goal. Developing players who could potentially play for the organization professionally down the road was. At U15 it was mostly WA kids; at the older ages, they're recruiting from all over the country and it gets more competitive. Nobody pays to get on the team. Sounders invests too much in every player to screw around like that.
