    WPL Academy

Does anyone have any feedback on this academy. Thanks

It’s ok. Not great, not bad. They get smoked by good club teams from ECNL and GA. Similar to ODP, except they’ll actually attempt to communicate with you.

I'm also curious about this academy. After the tryout process is complete. Will the girls that made the player pool, will they be good or really good players?

Tryouts are competitive and not everyone makes it. At the younger ages you will see some of the best players who will do Wpl and epd.

I agree. It's a good program for players sitting on the bench on ECNL A teams or a starter on a competitive B team regardless if they play ECNL, RCL or WPL. As a parent whose kids played in all the leagues, I found the WPL Academy offers these unfinished players an opportunity to improve and play at a high level at showcases. My kid wasn't playing a whole lot on one of the A teams for one of the area's biggest clubs. He is small and was overlooked, imo, and he tried the Academy. He loves it! The training is quality. And It gave him a place to shine. They also really help the kids on college recruiting and encourage them to make a plan. That wasn't the case with the ECNL club. They focus their efforts on the stars. I get it. My son still played for the ECNL team and he did get more playing time. And he has improved, mainly in his confidence, since at least on one team he is a starter and gets playing time where it matters. But the reality is that he is not a starter on the ECNL team. It's a really good team. I'd say if you are a regular starter on an ECNL A team, there is no reason to join the Wpl Academy. But if you're on a top team and not getting playing time, and you want to play at college, this program is a solid option.

Thank you for this information! My daughter tried out and was invited to the callback tryouts. Two of her teammates from her club team already my the “pool”, she wants so badly to improve her skills, game and in doing so her confidence!

Last year after WYSA shrank the pools significantly you saw a lot of RCL/NPSL kids trying out for WPL Academy. It's almost impossible now for those kids to make EPD if they don't play for PAC/EFC/SU/Blackhills

Positive experience so far with WPL academy, I find the quality of the players to be very good and the coaches seem engaged.

My daughter spent two seasons on the WPL (previously Surf) Academy team. We had a little trouble dealing with scheduling conflict between club and academy. But when we were able to attend games and practices, they were high quality experiences. I would say a step up from our experience on GA teams and a step below what we’ve seen on an ECNL club. It was a great confidence builder and skill development opportunity. Most importantly, it is a great vehicle to break out of your club silo. Meeting new players, new coaches, new families gives the player more diverse feedback and in turn gives them a vehicle to build a reputation and form relationships with people in other clubs. This was probably the single most important thing for us as our daughter ran out of room to grow at her first club and made the leap to a new one.
