Definitely fishy. But something I've learned over the years . . . The coaches like to have team managers that are from players on the top half of the team. That way the team manager doesn't use their position to try and influence the coach for their child's playing time or which position to play. If that's the case their kid could just have the traits that make them a good leader, or coach is trying to prevent conflict with TM. Take your pick. I personally think it should be those players that are a positive influence on team culture, and can provide positive leadership off and on the field. Not all coaches look for those qualities, unfortunately.

As an ex college athlete, I'm always intrigued why people give a **** who is captain. A coin toss and an arm band are meaningless. The players look up to people who act as leaders not to people chosen as captain. Sometimes it's the same people but often quite different. People looking from outside feel that captain has magical powers but most of the time they are just kids trying to imagine what a captain should do.

                    3.10 Team captain

The team captain has no special status or privileges but has a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of the team.

                    ---------------

The captains should take responsibility for the behaviour of their team-mates, encouraging them to play fairly and show respect towards the match officials and their decisions. However, they cannot be shown a red or yellow card for offences committed by a team-mate.

The captains have no special privileges to protest or argue with the referee or other match officials.

Both captains take part in the coin toss:
                    • before kick-off, to determine who kicks off and which goal to attack
                    • before penalties, to determine who takes the first kick and which goal will be used

Sounds like Tom needs to send an email out to his coaches.
