    Development Grants MLS Next

A move in the right direction for compensation fees? Or a sly way to get teams to move from ECNL to MLS Next?

Can you give more context? What are you talking about, your post is very vague.

This seems like huge news, a real big change and perhaps a sign of things to come. My gut feeling says this is really good.

I am still a little confused on how these development grants will work. Does a club that has parents pay for team and club dues deserve compensation for a players development? Maybe this will have clubs feel more inclined to provide some form of funding for players so that they can benefit from these grants?

Yes, so the parents that spend $4k for telemarketing fees and up to $20k for travel and maybe another $3k for outside training will continue to do so. But if your club happens to play in MLS Next will get a payment if your son turns out to be good. Makes sense right??

This is just a power play from MLS to encourage clubs to join their league, bc it wouldn’t work if it was just the MLS academies playing each other. Travel expenses would be astronomical. They need local teams as fodder to support their league.

Thanks for clearing it up, makes sense that the MLS would dangle this carrot in hopes of attracting more teams to join their league. Whether the clubs deserve the grants is irrelevant, it’s just a little enticement to expand their league so teams like Portland and Seattle don’t have to spend so much money traveling to NorCal to beat up on teams.
