Talent sets the ceiling. Experience and work ethic determine if the ceiling is reached, but those factors can be influenced by coaching and luck.

        • Talent? (athleticism & intelligence) 50%, let us be honest some are born with the genes capable of it and some simply are not
        • Familiarity with teammates? 0%
        • Coaching? 10%
        • Other? Remaining is probably mostly on player's time spend on training, resting properly, studying the game, nutrition, etc,

I think this conversation would be more interesting if you broke out talent into athleticism and intelligence.

            30% athleticism
            30% determination
            20% intelligence
            20% all other

Which is more important to reach your potential? The quality of your teammates or your coaches?

My experience — two kids (boy and girl) playing in college and my youngest currently on an ECNL team - ultimately it becomes 80% athleticism + 20% desire/determination (from the kid, not the parent).

The players on the field at U17 and beyond are the biggest, fastest, and strongest. Skill & intelligence matter, but every coach thinks they can polish a diamond in the rough.

Just look at the GK for the USMNT as an example
