    Surf Cup - San Diego

A solid start for THUSC Ireland... 2-2 tie with Breakaway SC (California State Champs).

It was back & forth all game. Ireland held a 1-0 lead after a nice shot from our main scoring forward (#2). Breakaway came out with a determined effort and scored two goals midway thru the second half (one on an outstanding "upper-V" shot from appx 15 yds out. The second off a cross to an open midfielder who got past our side defender); only to have Ireland tie it up immediately thereafter when the Breakaway keeper misplayed a ball and left the goal open for the Ireland forward.

This afternoon Ireland will play the SoCal Blues... another California powerhouse. More to come...

Good luck to everone at LO Nike Cup this weekend!

    THUSC Ireland vs. SoCal Blues

This game matched Ireland against the team GotSoccer.com has listed as the #1 GU15 Team in the nation. A well fought match. The Blues are experts at possession soccer and kept Ireland's players running non-stop. The Blues had more looks at goal, but outstanding defense and inspired goalkeeping caused SoCal to come away empty with a 0-0 score at halftime.

Midway thru the second half the Blues managed to get one past the Ireland defense and took a 1-0 lead. That score held up until Ireland created a corner-kick opportunity with two minutes remaining, and converted with a nice header goal by Ireland's forward (#2).

The final two minutes expired and Ireland completed their second come-from-behind tie against two of the country's best! Ireland plays the San Juan Spirits (NorCal) on Sunday morning, and a win puts them into the quarterfinals. To advance would be a major accomplishment. Keep your fingers crossed!

THUSC Ireland vs. San Juan Spirits

Another nail-biter this morning for THUSC Ireland. Playing against a very good team from NorCal, Ireland started fast and scored on a cross leading to a scramble in front of the SJ goal and a shot that came out of the crowd. Unfortunately, the lead did not last when SJ scored a minute before the half. The teams exchanged goals in the second half and the final score ended up 2-2.

The tie gave ireland 11 points (3 ties @ 2 pts each; 5 goals @ 1 pt each) which brought them into a 2nd Place tie with SoCal Blues (1 win @ 6 pts; 1 tie @ 2pts; 5 goals). The tie-breaker came down to goals allowed, which favored SoCal 4-5, so they advanced to the quarterfinals.

Overall, Ireland played inspired soccer and represented Oregon very well. The fact they played two of the best GU15 teams in the nation and held them even is a tremendous accomplishment, and something they should be very proud of.

Now it's on to club, ODP and high school tryouts. It should be a busy August. GOOD LUCK to all!
