In Trump's defense, I'll say there is a good chance that he's not an actual fascist; he's merely a con-man who plays one on TV, but is mainly concerned with fattening his wallet, and the zealous attempt to round up and deport every illegal immigrant (dark skinned, at least) that can be found is merely a sop to a racist base that wishes an actual fascist may come to power. Trump's more of a right-wing Hugo Chavez, than a Mussolini, let alone a Hitler.

At the very least, he's fascist-lite; and has little respect for democratic norms (small d). Given that his support base is a subculture that is highly fearful of losing their majority status as the nation browns, and seems eager and willing to do almost anything to keep "liberals" from gaining political power, he has a political party behind him that seems eager to exercise little restraint on him. (This party long claimed to be the party of conservatism and respect for institutions, turns out that was conditional on them being in charge of said institutions). There's quite a few lines that haven't been crossed yet--he's not yet defied a court order, nor arrested any political opponents, nor attempted to actually censor the media (though he may threaten and browbeat them).

But Trump's close enough to actual fascism, and far enough away from any of his predecessors since Andy Jackson, that treating him as such makes sense. The problem with most fascists is they don't write a raging mad manifesto like Hitler did--you don't find out they are fascists until it's too late, and they have absolute power, and the only way to be rid of them is with violence and civil war. When the original antifa were active, they were brawling in the streets with the brownshirts (and the reds) on a regular basis, and many Germans died as a result of this violence during the latter years of the Weimar Republic. Fortunately we aren't there yet.

It will be interesting to see what happens in 2020. If current polling trends hold, and he gets voted out, it will be more interesting to see what happens in 2021--especially if Trump has reason to fear that the moment he leaves the White House, it will be a perp-walk.

As much as I dislike Trump, I doubt he will get prosecuted at the federal level after leaving office. Hopefully he just becomes a bad memory and entertains us all with his moronic, angry old man tweeting
