Seeding Meeting

Just read the email regarding the seeding meeting. I'm just a lowly coach so I CAN NOT attend. Bold and all Caps.

My team(s) do a few tournaments and friendly's over the summer and I decide what division to place them when it comes time. When the list comes out I look at the teams, some I've played, some I haven't and it gives me an idea of what to expect.

I noticed that a couple teams moved in, and a few others moved out of my division. Perhaps some thought they were better, or worse so people found the right fit for them.

It seems that this process is just fine so that bears the questions: What is the purpose of a meeting?

Its a good thing you feel good about the landing spot of your team, and I have a feeling many coaches feel the same way. But there are always a handful that are not happy (and sometimes they are right, and sometimes they are wrong) so this is their chance to have their team moved to the division they feel is correct. It doesn't mean its for sure, but its possible.

There are also teams/coaches/clubs that heavily recruit and base their entire club/coaching philosophy on what league their teams play in. It’s more important that their teams get in the highest division so they can keep players

typically this lot gets smacked when they get in the wrong league (over their head) and loses the players during the course the year. placing them appropriately doesn't work for their delusional egos and welfare of the kids. It's truly a disgusting, disingenuous and harmful practice. karma is a biatch

It would be interesting to track the effect when this goes bad. At U12, 13 players, and the coaches ego, or club, and even parents, and they lose every game 7-0. Seen it.

Of 13 5 never want to play again. 5 Go to a different club, and 3 stay - either have no other option or drank the koolaid that it's better this way or things will get better.

Recently I've encountered a team just like this. We all started out at at U11 and they had an A and B with lots of potential. And now they are down to barely 1 team with a bunch that have quit or moved on to different clubs.

Sometimes teams are put in the wrong division simply by mistake. They show well in summer tournaments, but it turns out it was against opponents whose stars were on vacation. Or they suffer from the "curse of the B team", and their top players are promoted to the club's A team mid-season, and replaced with players who were cut from the A team. Sometimes the kids who are cut never report to the B team, they just leave. If they do stay, there was often times there was a reason they were dropped, and the A team has just upgraded at the B team's expense, leaving the B team no longer able to compete in the league they signed up for. Seen that happen.

Problem brackets

I too am a lowly coach, but my understanding is the seeding meeting is to take care of the problem brackets (either too few teams or too many.) I don't think there are any brackets this year that have too few teams, but there a couple of large brackets that will need to be split. I suspect most of the discussion will be on those.

Ever get the feeling on here sometimes that there are intra-club discussions going on?

That is because all clubs are basically the same make up. 10-12 families that are all pretty cool, 2-3 that don't have a clue, and 2-3 that are every example of who not to be.

I did see a couple teams in D2 I thought would be D1...but I can see why the coach thought that was the right fit for them. But what surprises is me most are the 2-3 teams that are Premier and D1 Red that are nowhere near ready for that level of competition and I think it's setting those kids up for failure. I think it's an example of adults wanting to say they are "premier" vs. what's right for the players. Shame on them.
