U19 teams splitting into two tiers - basically MLS vs all the rest. USSF trying to keep MLS clubs happy and still in the league. Travel will be a joke.

"As first reported by Soccer America‘s Mike Woitalla and confirmed by SoccerWire’s sources, U.S. Soccer has split the Boys Development Academy U-18/19 age group into two divisions for the 2019-2020 season.

The Red tier will be the top flight, and will feature 36 teams, including all 22 MLS academies.

The Blue tier is set to include 44 teams in the second level of the U-18/19 age group.

There will be cross-division competition between the Red and Blue tiers at national events, including the DA Playoffs. The Red division will have 16 automatic qualifiers, and the Blue division will have 8 automatic qualifiers in the 32-team playoff field. The remaining 8 playoff qualifiers will be decided via the new DA Cup competition.

Other age groups will not be affected this season by the changes to the U-18/19 level.

Hopefully you understand more drastic changes are coming for the Boys DA. This is a minor tweak for this year setting up the following years with the elimination of non MLS clubs and the formation of just 2 age groups (U15 & U17) all MLS. u14 and below + u18/19 will vanish from DA.

Hopefully you understand that designing youth soccer around an entitled/closed first division is not the way top youth soccer works world wide and is massively f’d up.

Hopefully you realize the rest of the world have senior clubs (some level of pro).

USA has no such thing outside of MLS and a few USL sides.

And over time MLS and USL will probably merge their academy system. Then there's pro level and the rest. Long term that's better for pro level players and for the others who just want to play in college they can do ECNL or DA2 or whatever.

Crossfire and Barca Arizona outperform many "pro" academies across multiple metrics (including placement at next level and winning on the field) and they just both got relegated in this new system.

Fed setting up a system for only the pro affiliated clubs is short-sighted.

But hey, it is the way of US Soccer. Looking forward to more world cup performances like 2018!

Crossfire for sure is totally political. No system is ever going to be perfect and 100% apolitical. However, for the nation's top talent, shrinking DA is a good thing.
