I realize that bench and some lower level players have made the Thorns academy teams but they can only take who tries out. The academy has actually turned a few of those bench players into full time starters and they are developing as players much more than they would have at their home clubs. This is actually a testament to the Thorns and should be applauded for it. They also have many who almost never play and shouldn’t be applauded for that. Thorns should also be applauded for partially subsidizing the soccer, making it a little cheaper than ecnl. Even if they get the money from OYSA players via peregrine, they don’t have to do it and it is nice they do.

No league is perfect. Pros and cons to all.

Thorns DA are paying about 65% of the cost. Oregon ECNL clubs are paying 0% of the cost.

That might be true in the rest of the country, but in Oregon the thorns probably have about 30% of the top players. ECNL has about 50%.

It really doesn't matter does it? I think both have good coaches and you will get better if you want to.

A lot of girls don't want to give up high school and that is understandable. It makes it hard.

Hopefully all the girls are having fun and getting better at wherever the are.

Are you suggesting it's appropriate to use OYSA player fees to subsidize the Thorns Academy?

Is it appropriate to use OYSA player fees to pay Diego Valeri's salary?

Is it appropriate to use them to build the Prov Park expansion?

Is it appropriate to use them to by kegs of beer for game day?

Is it appropriate to use it for Merritt Paulson's vacation to Paris?

If Peregrine has earned money legitimately, they may spend it how they like. The notion that because Peregrine has earned a small portion of its revenue providing services to OYSA, that they then have a moral obligation to not run a girls' academy for their professional women's team because two obnoxious local clubs view this endeavor as "competition" to their own travel offerings, is asinine.

Now if CU and FC and UPDX and whoever else, wish to participate in non-OYSA leagues in order to minimize the revenues that goes to Peregrine (even though this is an entirely symbolic act--the Timbers and Thorns don't miss that money, and are still getting paid plenty for all of the B and C teams at Crossfire, THUSC, and FC for whom there is no US Club travel league)--that's their business.

But Peregrine's money is Peregrine's money. MP doesn't need the permission of KL or any other local DoC to spend his money as he likes. When the OYSA contract is up, it probably should be re-negotiated. But again--it was these clubs (and a few others) PRIOR attempt to cripple OYSA that forced them to deal with the Timbers in the first place. Y'all wet the bed on this one, so don't complain about sleeping in the puddle.

The relevant numbers are not what they are or are not subsidizing, but what the players have to spend and what they get and what they have to give up.

No. I don’t think it’s appropriate and I think the contract the OYSA guy gave to Peregrine is crap. However, Timbers/Thorns don’t have to subsidize at all. The same exact players would come calling and be happy to pay for the patch. Just pointing out that it is nice they subsidize. Even if for all the wrong reasons. Plenty wrong with Thorns program but I still think subsidizing when they don’t have to is nice.

You would think the powers to be at US Soccer would review their offerings for GDA and realize that even when they give it away; top talent goes to ECNL. Continuing down this road for GDA seems dumb.

Oh brother. Noone crippled the old oysa more than westside and eastside/gavin, that was until it was no longer in their interest to do so.

The OPL is a sad chapter in the History of Oregon Youth Soccer, it set a state back by decades.

True, you have to take the players that come to tryouts. You can't magically make up players that don't want to come.

OPL and OYSA were about the same. The biggest trouble has come from introducing ecnl and then gda into Oregon. Three leagues has watered everything so down. And with a lot of the best players going off to ecnl or gda, there is almost no competition in OYSA unless you can get on one of the few remaining top OYSA teams in your age group: FCSC00, Salem01, ***C02, GPS/FCSC03 and such. Oregon soccer would be better off if ecnl & gda never existed. Parents would have a lot more money to pay for college and the players would have a lot more time to study.

Who do you think gets to pick the roster? Maybe someone who works for US Soccer? Isn't US soccer the main driver behind the girl's DA?

Look at the results of the last U17 World Cup. The group dominated these small tournaments as well then when they got to the World Cup they could not get out of group play.

Sort of silly to say the products of DA is raising the bar. Take a look at historical results.

If everyone played in Oregon you’d find that no one could lie and say they are better by default because it would show like every single year in history that no club has more than 2 teams at the top in Oregon and no league or association has a monopoly on it either.

You’d also find that like every single year in Oregon history only 1/5 teams would actually do well outside of Oregon.
