I gotta get out and see some of these 0-6 thrashings the Thorns Academy gets. That had to be fun to watch the parents reactions. If they are behind 0-5 and steal a goal, do they celebrate?

The parents are a few $9 beers in by then so they’re celebrating every goal at that point....

I don’t think the 0-6 thrashings are the problem. The problem is the playing time. The starting 11 play all game every game and 3-4 others get a little playing time. If you’re losing all your games anyway, at least mix it up a little to give the bench a chance to develop. They might surprise you. The 00/01 Academy actually has a much worse team in their league - the Earthquakes. Everyone, including the Thorns regularly thrashes the Earthquakes. Thorns thrashed them 9-0 a couple weeks ago. Any starts or game time for the usual bench knowing it was a perfect game to do that and still win? No. 9-0 and only the normal starting 11 got 99% of the minutes. No wonder girls aren’t flocking to that. So much for development.

Looking at the match reports, I tend to agree. It's nice to get free airfare to Florida, but if my kid is only playing 5-10 minutes per game, or not playing at all, I would have to question what the he** we are doing. I'm sure the training the academy girls receive is very good - I'm not disputing that. But kids like to actually play the game and if a few are getting very very few minutes, as those match reports indicate, I think that's a failure of the program.
I don't know the players on the academy teams well enough to be sure about this, but my guess is there is a constant shuffle of bench players between academy and the two ECNL clubs and the Portland area clubs.

If they are truly trying to develop kids it seems they should have equal playing time for everyone. When a kid gives up a weekend to fly to some god forsaken place and sits on the bench that is not very helpful. I mean I guess they get to watch and maybe learn a little bit.

You are probably in a bit over your head if you are not getting any playing time with the Thorns. I would look at other options and be realistic with your future in soccer. Would these kids even be on there high school varsity team?

Some might make varsity. Some might not. It is a mix like any team.
