They did the best they could do. The thorns turned into a bit of a joke after and like many Alliance teams weren’t helpful or good for the players.

If all the Cfc kids stayed where they were they would have still gotten to where they are and if argue that they would be in a better spot with players better off and teams better off.

The relationship with the thorns program was more toxic and destructive to Cfc and most other Alliance clubs.

      No question.

The entire cu club is operating on illusion.
False but, in any event, the ECNL teams are not playing in the State Cup unless they choose to play OYSA.

Eugene is even worse because the DOC coached the 99 team, which benefited greatly from his decision not to split them into birth years. It backfired the last two years when Westside knocked them off in state cup. But along the way he completely decimated the 00 and 01 age groups, weekend the 02 group, and earned a ton of animosity. Almost every top 00, 01, and 02 girl in Eugene has either quit soccer or is playing in Portland. The few good players that are left (and it's very few) are there only for financial or logistical reasons (not everyone can do a drive to Portland on a regular basis). And strangely enough, the first team in their club that went full birth year from the start and didn't give any players to the next older team is coached by...you guessed it...the club's DOC. His teams benefited on both sides of the birth year fiasco. That's why we left Eugene - DOC caring more about his teams than what's best for the entire club.
The birth year switch was conceived by some guys with market research in a board room that desperately want to copy what Europe is doing.

The cool guy drives a BMW. So the nerdy guy goes out and buys a BMW. Guess what, he is still a nerd.

US Soccer consistently makes poor choices that are just them trying to be cool. No regard for how sports work in the US.

The birth year switch was to align us with the rest of the world. So what if girls quit or don't start playing because their best friend won't be on their teams. That is so small minded and ignorant to worry about that.

Most of the girls will be playing internationally against France and Spain and trying to adjust to the birth year when you are arriving on foreign soil would be very difficult.

This will benefit the USMNT. They lose consistently because we haven't been on the birth year. Same with the USWNT. They have been terrible and this change should help.

"Most of the girls will be playing internationally..." Um. Do you realize this change effected 100% of kids who play soccer in the US and of those kids, maybe - maybe .0001% will play internationally? What a dumb take.

Aligning us with the rest of the world would be just fine if it was a true alignment. In order to do that you would need to have subsidized academies that kids try out for and are placed in. For the top kids, these academies would include a school component.

Because we don't have that here, and will never have that here (don't kid yourself into thinking DA or GDA even comes close to this), you end up with a pay to play model where the teams are divided by birth years but their school grades are divided by an August to August split.

This isn't just a matter of kids wanting to play with their friends. This is a matter of 8th grade kids born September - December being left with no teams for a season. And worse, it's a matter of those same kids being left with no team for their entire senior year of high school, unless clubs combine age groups, as has been discussed on this thread. That means that 33% of kids playing soccer are adversely affected by this shortsighted decision that maybe benefits .0001%. Do those numbers make sense to anyone?

Some clubs did the right thing from the get go - went straight birth year regardless of how it effected team strength. This was smart because it was consistent, it was fair, and things tended to balance themselves out. Vancouver is a good example of this. They had some strong 01's, but it was better for the overall health of the club to go straight birth year.

Other clubs weren't able to do this, because their numbers don't support it. This was especially true in outlying areas and why you saw clubs like Bend and Medford form multi year high school teams. This was smart for them because they formed teams with what they had. Not really any other option.

Lastly, a few clubs allowed DOC's with huge egos or overbearing parents to dictate what they would do. They kept their "super teams" together and used the birth year change to enhance those teams, to the detriment of other teams in their club. Salem did this with their 01/02 team. It worked out great for the kids on that team, but greatly harmed their 00 and 02 age groups. All so the overbearing parents could have their way. Eugene did the same thing with their 99 team. They lost an entire birth year of teams (00's) and greatly weakened their 01 and 02 pools. All so the DOC could keep his super team together.

We get it. Teams are messed up because of changing to birth year and also not changing to birth year to keep super teams together. Those teams could’ve gone to the board. The Docs arent to blame. Let’s move to the now.

                Predictions:
                00 Salmon Creek beats Eugene
                01 Salem beats FCP
                02 Vancouver beats Westside
                03 GPS beats Vancouver
                04 Eastside beats Westside
                05 Thusc beats United
                06 Vancouver beats Salem

Will CU 06 have to play in the 05 State Cup group? They play pretty soccer and if they play their own age group (06), I wonder how they would do against FCP 06 Pre ECNL team, which also has some good players.

They can play 06 and they'll dominate. The 05s played 04 fall league and 05 State Cup last year.

I believe a team is allowed to play up in league but not in State Cup.
