Most teams are just trying to get through this futsal crap and winter so they can get back to the pitch. There are only a few futsal specific teams around. And they aren’t even doing that hot besides a couple RCF teams -
I took the futsal-specific course that the Oregon Referee committee put on before the start of the season. I paid the $50, sat in a room for a few hours (already a Grade 8 ref) and got the credentials. I know the rules (played/still play futsal). They had a whole bunch of current refs sign up for the classes, so it sounds like they don't have a lack of refs to choose from. Not sure if they all attended the training session or not, but if they did they weren't paying attention since pretty much all they talked about was the differences between futsal and outdoor.Comment

For the younger ages Futsal in an amazing tool for development. The reason a lot of the older teams are not doing that well is because most of the kids have not played anything that requires the foot skills and finesse that futsal does. The big kids go onto the little courts and try playing bootball. Outdoor tactics don't translate to futsal. If you go watch some of the younger age groups playing futsal you will see some teams who can run circles around their older counterparts when it comes to ball control, technique and skill.Originally posted by Unregistered View PostComment

The Winter League hasn't been too bad. Futsal Cup looks like it could be a disaster though, at least the u11 boys brackets. The placement of teams looks bad.
Cascadia FC, second place in the Premier Division during Winter League, are in the same bracket as D1 teams for the tournament instead of playing in the Premier Bracket. Terrible oversight from OYSA and/or Cascadia FC is just looking for an easy win - either way, no gain for the kids.
PCU Blue Herons, ran away with the D1 winter league and should have been playing in the Premier division for Winter League...they are in a bracket for the Futsal Cup that has D2 Winter League teams. They'll win games by 9-10 goals; again, no gain for the kids.
Safe to say, u11 non-Premier bracket final will feature Cascadia FC vs PCU...two teams who should be in the Premier Bracket.Comment

Take on facilities:
1. RCF West. Probably the nicest facility to watch a game. Surfaces are nice too.
2. RCF East. Depends on what court you get; the turf fields cut the kids up, Rio is nice. Bar/restaurant solid. Oddly, this place also gives off a really weird vibe - super intense in there sometimes (maybe because it is loud), saw some of the worse parent behavior there.
3. Eastmoreland. Mixed bag. Actually the best surface we played on WHEN they are clean; problem is by end of day they get really dirty and kids are slipping. Made worse by a very rough parking lot (Harmony-esq); kids tracking in mud all over the place. The mixed member/public thing is a mess - public isn't allowed on courts in front, but there is nothing really mark it or enforce it; manager was constantly yelling at kids to get off, but kids no idea they weren't allowed on there.
4. Oregon Premier - surfaces were solid, but courts felt a little smaller.
Referees - actually got better as season went. Saw refs towards the end of the season that have seen play futsal; actually knew the rules, etc. On bigger courts, even the best refs miss stuff on the opposite side of the court; not sure what can be done about it other than players/coaches occasionally helping with the call or adding a 2nd ref for more important games.
One thing about futsal in general - there are lots of blowouts. Saw kids crying (both genders) after futsal losses more than outdoor; not sure what to do about it.
Continue to like this option for our kids and that the facilities are working together for this.Comment

OYSA futsal cup is just about over, and there's one thing that pretty much every coach I've heard from seems to agree on:
The refs stink.
Many of 'em don't know the rules of the game, or call the game like it's outdoor soccer.
