Tenorio: MLS contemplating removing homegrown territories for DA

    https://theathletic.com/611368/2018/10/24/

Would this help save the Timbers DA?
Would it simultaneously further sever the Timbers DA as legitimate pathway for Oregon players? Today only half of the u19 team comes from Oregon/SW Washington, and first team has had only 1 home grown player in its history.

Timbers aside, it won't be an option for many players unless there are residency plans in place. Residencies cost money to run and clubs don't get much from homegrown players to begin with. A few MLS clubs have it but not many. And some families aren't willing to ship their kids off. Clubs should be able to compete for top players but I don't see this making a big difference without other fundamental changes elsewhere.

      Foreign academies don't have territories.

They don't have a mechanism to try to divide up the market like MLS attempts to do here; however in Europe there are child-protective requirements that limit clubs ability to sign players.

Also the much talked about training compensation/solidarity payment system does limit movement a bit - signing club has to pay something to the old club, particularly if the player has real promise.

But that really doesn't happen here and MLS teams don't benefitmuch from homegrowns. Parent resistance, education concerns and distance will prevent this from having much of an impact. MLS clubs don'twant to be in the education business and it's costs a good deal of money to run residential programs vs small paybacks .

So half the team isn't from the local area? You would think they could be 0-5 with local players just as easy. Who is running this &@#* show?
