99.9% of female soccer players end game is college soccer, or soccer recruitment as a hook or bump into admission to a highly selective college or a “reach” college academically for the player.

Since college coaches don’t recruit out of high schools anymore, players must play on travel teams to be seen and to play good competition. In Oregon, this can and is done by either playing OYSA (on a top travel team like ***C 02), playing on an ECNL team, or playing GDA. GDA was late to the game and has unpopular restrictions like no hs soccer, very limited subs & 4x/wk training 10mos of year. GDA is a nice option for the .1% that want to go pro or the players who are willing to give up hs soccer and everything else for the soccer bump from playing in the GDA. All three paths lead girls to the exact same colleges so many (majority in Oregon) top girls have chosen to stay out of GDA to enjoy hs soccer, other sports & activities and not be subject to the strict GDA rules. This is also why top clubs like Slammers, Hawks, MVLA, etc either never joined GDA or left & returned to ECNL. 99% of their customers are better served by ECNL or OYSA/NPL. All 3 choices in Oregon require lots of travel and are expensive. Common sense says if all 3 paths end you in the same spot (ex: we have PAC12 Univ of Oreg recruits from all 3 paths), pick whichever one you like the best and enjoy. It’s simple and obvious!

While I sense you are bitter or dense or both, I do agree that the soccer travel situation is ridiculous all around. This is the fault of the neighborhood clubs, colleges and US Soccer for making high school soccer obsolete for recruiting purposes. However, if your dd simply wants to play local D2, D3 or JC soccer than you don’t need GDA or ECNL and you don’t even need to join a top travel OYSA team to get recruited. Girls who only play at local Oregon clubs and not on top travel teams regularly commit to play soccer at every d2, d3 and jc in Oregon. However, many girls who don’t NEED to actually WANT to play ECNL or GDA and that’s great for them too! Different strokes for different folks.

Slammers & Hawkins along with 80 or so former USYS/US Clubs were accepted into DA- that wasn't the question.

The question was directed at the low brow clubs in Oregon who answer: 'ask slammers or hawks.'

That's like asking the amateur golfer who travels all over the country playing in the fringes of PGA type events with the dream of qualifying to get his 'card' on his or most cases parents dime, why do you do it? His retort ask Tiger & Phil.

Love it, this incredible logic. Tells the whole story.

          Wrong:

          05: FC 2, XF 1
          06: FC 1, XF 1

Don't know 07 score, but those are the official scores per USSDA.

              * It's geared for college programs, who can essentially cherry pick and watch the top players at an event with 40 clubs and really only want to see 5 or 10 of the club teams.
The bottom clubs without any real top talent make it possible for the top teams to get visibility. Same thing happened with ODP
              * US Club, which seems to have a bit of a rivalry with both USYS and with the federation
              * Girls and their families, forced to shell out ridiculous amounts of money or risk getting left behind. Particularly lower-income girls who cannot afford the high travel costs but get told that they will be passed over if they don't sign up.
*ECNL does serve an important niche, and it's a fine pathway. But it's attempt to monopolize premier girl soccer is disgusting.

              *Fact Check
              - Comparing American collegiate Football to any collegiate sport other than Basketball is simply disingenuous and beyond naive.

-Women's soccer has 5x the recruiting $$ than it's only comparable sport Men's Soccer. All due to title ix has travel recruiting budgets that are simply mind blowing compared to their only counterpart.

-US Soccer DA has the mantle as the preferred destination for both boys & girls college recruiting given the player quality and National team route.
US Club tourneys/showcases and regional long standing US Club/USYS tourneys get a bunch of coaches, absolutely. But they don't have the concentration of the best players so they appeal to all kinds of clubs and all types of NAIA, JC, DIII DII and D1 coaches.

-US Club is delusional if they have what you call a rivalry with their governing body US Soccer. That's just plain insanity.

-Spending ridiculous amounts of money is a choice. It's only a loss if you think these monies are well spent on useless travel to play events throughout the year. The reality is if you aren't a decent player no volume of travel can change that.

-Leagues typically serve a simple competitive function, but this US Club thing called ecnl isn't really a league, at it's core it's a slick marketing charade that has destroyed the competitive culture for 40 to 50 girls clubs in the country and has been the catalyst of the 'US Soccer' transition into a DA platform for girls. Ostensibly ending the play for nothing cattle calls. A strange small cult of devotees does not make a monopoly ecnl, just a short deviation from reality that is soon corrected in the course of time, by folks with common sense and deeper pockets.

US Soccer DA is this gold standard for youth. Why do you have an issue with this fact?

                Reality much?

These are all reasons why most, but not all, of Oregon’s top female players don’t choose to play GDA. The patch makes no difference for girls because their end game is college not the pros. Most top girls in Oregon prefer to play in OYSA or ECNL. Not only top clubs have tried GDA and left but players too. All game playing starters have left Oregon’s GDA to return to their neighborhood clubs. USSF putting their brand on one of three triplet donkeys, doesn’t turn that donkey into a thoroughbred race horse. All three are still donkeys.

Simply stated your kid plays for a local club.

Or for the very rare ultra talented kid in the metro area they might get selected by the professional staff of The MLS Portland Timbers & NWSL Portland Thorns for placement in their exclusive (30 to 40 Oregonians-Total Boys & Girls) DA.

Kids don’t chose to play in the Portland Timbers MLS or Portland Thorns NWSL DA, they have to be chosen. Having seen any turn down selection in the last 7 years for the National DA level.

It’s hilarious reading your posts, thanks for the nonsense. It’s truly a gift you have.

Nobody is doing the girl DA any more.

If you are a B or C team bench player you might get selected by the professional staff of the NWSL Thorns to be on the thorns academy and call yourself the ultra elite B team players.

If you are a 2nd string player or not getting a lot of playing time the thorns has a Playing Time Guarantee of some sort. Everyone irregardless of quality gets to start games. It is pretty neat and heartwarming to think about.

Springtime comes early in the Pacific Northwest. By mid-February the birds are chirping, the trees have started blooming, and Crossfire enters its annual Springtime Slump. By March, the daffodils will be pushing out of the ground, and we will get comments on this board about how only boys who live in Lake Oswego and West Linn are multi-sport athletes, which for some reason excuses everything. How I love this time of year!

All the non-elite kids still play with their local clubs playin in usys or us club leagues.

No clubs in Oregon were ever selected to national level DA, a couple applied but of course got rejected..
