Are kickarounds before tryouts legal?

I see clubs are having kickarounds in April prior to tryouts.

Will Mike Smith and the Timbers provide some accountability?

They make the rules and rule youth soccer with an iron fist. They are quick to fine clubs but will they have the gonads to make sure clubs follow the rules?

Anybody can go to any club's practices whenever they want. All clubs have tryouts scheduled for May, no offers can be made in April (for OYSA , ECNL is a different matter)

This has been going on for the 5 + years I have been around, and I imagine much longer....are you a first time parent??

Legal or illegal it happens all the time. It's the best way for coaches to assess players and vice versa. Where it's prohibited the intent is to stop early poaching/protect clubs. But it isn't what is in the best interest of the players. And really cattle call tryouts are a joke and don't work for clubs either. All around, having players come to 2+ practices is a much better assessment tool.

Yes, or a "pre-tryout clinic". Generally optional (though clubs will encourage attendance).

If you are a new player to a club, might be worth going. If you are an existing player, they already know you and probably have a good idea how to place you, no matter how much the club might act as though the slate is clean at tryouts and the prior seasons don't matter.

Top clubs don't do kick-arounds. They just open up their regular practices to anyone who wants to check things out. As long as the kid doesn't actually change clubs until after the "official" tryout date, all is good.

I wouldn't call it "opening up." Usually you have to request an invite, include your kids experience in the email. If they're not interested you should get a "we're all set with our player needs for now, thanks for your interest" response back.

Nothing in the Oregon Revised Statutes that prohibits it, so yes they are legal. It's a consumer based industry, so naturally consumers can take a test drive if they do choose.

Not how it works at most top clubs. they don't want to waste their time letting any Tom, Dick and Harry show up. Disrupts their practice time too and isn't fair to current players. Ask for an invite, if anything just to be polite and get the coach's attention if you do attned an open session

Well, that's how it works at the top club in Oregon. Probably not an issue at TA and GPS as nobody in their right mind would move to those clubs anyway.

Why would it be illegal?
